This website takes part in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising programme that lets sites earn advertising fees by linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
What that means in practice
Some pages on this site, mainly the gear and packing guides, contain links to products on Amazon. If you follow one of those links and buy something, we may receive a small commission from Amazon. The price you pay is exactly the same as it would be if you went to Amazon directly. Nothing is added to your cost.
Those commissions help cover the cost of researching, writing and hosting these guides, which stay free to read and carry no paywall.
How we choose what to recommend
No brand pays us to appear on this site, and no manufacturer has any say in what we write. Products are named because they meet the conditions of gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Volcanoes National Park: waterproofing that copes with roughly 2,400mm of rain a year, tread that sheds red clay, ventilation that works in humid air at altitude.
Where the honest answer is that you do not need to buy something, we say so. Walking sticks are handed out free at every trailhead. Gaiters, ponchos, daypacks and gumboots can often be borrowed from your lodge or hired near the park for a few dollars. Those recommendations earn us nothing and they stay in because they are true.
Where you will see disclosures
Every page carrying affiliate links states this clearly near the top, directly after the opening paragraph, and again at the foot of the page. Individual affiliate links are marked in the page code so that search engines can identify them as paid links.
Prices and availability
We do not publish product prices, because prices and stock change constantly and any figure we printed would be wrong within weeks. Where cost guidance is useful we describe tiers rather than numbers. For current pricing, check the retailer directly at the time you buy.
Questions
If anything here is unclear, or you think a recommendation is wrong, get in touch through the contact page. Corrections are welcome and we would rather fix an error than defend it.
