Planning a gorilla trekking safari to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park involves four decisions, and they are best made in this order: when to travel, which sector to trek from, how to get there, and where to stay. Because only 36 gorilla permits are issued per day across the whole park, the permit is the constraint that governs every other choice — secure it first and build the rest of the trip around it.

Step 1: Secure Your Gorilla Permit
A Bwindi gorilla trekking permit costs USD $800 per person for foreign non-residents, USD $700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. The extended Gorilla Habituation Experience costs USD $1,500 and is available only in the Rushaga sector. Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and no walk-in permits are sold at any sector gate.
Book three to six months ahead for the peak dry seasons of June–August and December–February. In the low-season months of April, May, and November, four to eight weeks is usually sufficient, and some operators list discounted permits during those periods.

Step 2: Choose When To Visit
Bwindi is trekkable year-round, but conditions vary considerably. The dry seasons deliver firmer trails and better light; the wet months bring fewer visitors, lower prices, and a greener, more dramatic forest. Altitude keeps temperatures cool in every month of the year.

Step 3: Choose Your Trekking Sector
Bwindi has four trekking sectors, and they are not interchangeable. They differ in altitude, terrain difficulty, number of habituated gorilla families, lodge availability, and driving distance from Entebbe or Kigali. Choosing the sector before booking accommodation prevents the most common planning mistake.
- Buhoma — northern sector, the original trekking base, most accessible, widest lodge range
- Ruhija — eastern sector, highest altitude, strongest birding
- Rushaga — southern sector, most habituated families, the only Habituation Experience
- Nkuringo — southwest sector, most physically demanding, ridge views over the Congo

Step 4: Getting There
Bwindi is roughly 550 km from Kampala — an eight to ten hour drive. Many international visitors instead fly into Kigali, Rwanda, which is only four to five hours from the park via the Cyanika border. Charter flights to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips cut the journey to about 90 minutes plus a short road transfer.

Step 5: Where To Stay
Each sector has its own accommodation cluster, ranging from community campsites to high-end eco-lodges. Book accommodation in the same sector as your permit — transfers between sectors on the morning of a trek are not practical, since briefings begin at 07:30.

What Else To Do While You Are There
Most visitors build two to four days around the trek itself. Bwindi has 18 documented activities that do not require a gorilla permit, including Batwa cultural trails, Albertine Rift birding, waterfall walks, community village tours and cycling with the Ride 4 a Woman project.
What To Pack
Waterproof ankle-support boots, long trousers and long sleeves in neutral colours, a full waterproof layer, gardening gloves, and 1.5–2 litres of water are the non-negotiables. Flash photography is prohibited during gorilla encounters.

Extending Your Trip
