Cuckooland Lodge, also listed as Cuckooland Tented Lodge, is a small tented camp of four tents on the eastern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, about 15 km from the Ruhija briefing point for gorilla trekking. It has usually been booked through a safari operator for a Ruhija permit. We could not confirm that it is taking guests today, so check before you plan around it.
Where Cuckooland Sits for Ruhija Gorilla Trekking
Cuckooland occupies a steep sided valley on the eastern side of Bwindi, below the road that runs between Butogota and Ruhija. The grounds cover about ten acres and run down to within roughly 20 metres of the forest edge. The nearest houses are a couple of kilometres away. Nobody stumbles on this place by accident.
For Ruhija gorilla trekking, the camp is about 15 km from the Uganda Wildlife Authority post on the Ruhija ridge, a drive most sources put at 30 to 40 minutes. That is further than the lodges strung along Ruhija village itself, and the morning start is earlier as a result.
One operator page places Cuckooland near Nkuringo and Rushaga in Kisoro District. That is wrong. Every other source, including details first published by the lodge, puts it on the Ruhija side of the park, far from the southern sectors.

Cuckooland Tents and Rooms on a Bwindi Safari
There are four tents, each a double, raised on a wooden platform under a grass thatched roof with a wide veranda facing the forest. The camp was built mostly from local natural materials. Each tent has its own toilet and shower, so you are not sharing facilities.
Guest opinion on the tents has been mixed. Some reviewers liked the beds and the forest view from the veranda; others described the canvas as tired and the bathrooms as basic. Hot water has sometimes needed to be requested ahead of a shower. None of that rules the place out, but expect a rustic camp rather than a polished safari lodge.
Meals, Electricity and Facilities on Your Ruhija Gorilla Trip
Meals are taken in a small restaurant with a view over the forest. Fruit and vegetables come from the camp’s own garden, and guests have tended to praise the cooking as hearty and homely. The host who set up the camp has long been part of the stay: reviewers often mention long dinner conversations. Whether the same people run it now is something to ask.
Listings mention a bar, laundry, security, a small gym and patios. Electricity is less clear. Recent operator pages talk about electricity and charging points, while older guest reports describe tents without electricity. Pack a battery pack and a head torch, and charge cameras whenever the main area has a supply.
Mobile signal on site has been weak in the past, and one early report advised sending text messages when calls failed. Do not plan on working online from here.
Gorilla Trekking from Cuckooland in the Ruhija Sector
Gorilla trekking from Cuckooland means a Ruhija permit. Uganda issues permits for a sector and a date, so check that yours says Ruhija before you settle on this camp. A Buhoma, Rushaga or Nkuringo permit would mean a long drive in the dark. Our main guide to gorilla tours in Bwindi explains how permits, sectors and lodges fit together.
The Ruhija briefing starts early in the morning on the ridge, at roughly 2,300 metres, the highest of Bwindi’s four trekking sectors. Rangers assign visitors to one of the habituated families: Bitukura, Oruzogo or Mukiza, with the Kyaguriro research group opened at busy times. Each family takes up to eight trekkers, you spend one hour with them once found, and UWA asks everyone to keep at least 10 metres away. The minimum age is 15.
Ruhija treks often start with a steep descent from the ridge into the valleys, so the climb out at the end is the hard part. Porters are hired at the briefing point. Gloves for the nettles and gaiters for the mud are on our gorilla trekking packing list. Some listings say Cuckooland arranges the gorilla habituation experience; in Uganda that runs from Rushaga in the far south, several hours away by road, so it does not pair well with this camp.
Birding Walks and Nature Trails Around Cuckooland
The camp’s name is a clue. Early reports recorded close to 200 bird species on and around the grounds, and the forest edge below the tents draws birds and primates to fruiting trees. Guests have described hearing chimpanzees from the camp, and monkeys are seen often, though no sighting is guaranteed.

Ruhija is the best birding area in Bwindi. The guided trail down to the Mubwindi swamp, booked through UWA in Ruhija, is the classic birding tour for Albertine Rift specials, including the rare African green broadbill. Shorter nature walks and community visits can be arranged nearby, and the quiet road itself makes for easy birding on a rest day.
Who Cuckooland Suits on a Gorilla Trekking Safari
It suits fit travellers who want seclusion, birdsong and forest views more than comfort. Birders on a Ruhija permit will get the most out of it, and anyone who enjoys staying somewhere small and personal will find little else like it on the ridge.
It does not suit anyone who struggles with steep paths, travellers who want reliable electricity and Wi Fi, or those who prefer to walk to the briefing point. Children under 15 cannot trek, and the steep path makes it a hard place for small ones anyway.
Cuckooland Compared with Other Bwindi Safari Lodges
Within Ruhija, lodges in the village put you minutes from the briefing. Trekkers Tavern Cottages is one simple option on the ridge, and our Bwindi safari lodges guide lists the others by sector and budget. Cuckooland gives up that convenience for a more remote setting next to the forest.
If your plans can move north, Buhoma has the widest choice, from the midrange cottages of Engagi Lodge to the upmarket Bwindi Lodge, both close to the Buhoma briefing. The Buhoma gorilla trekking guide explains how that sector differs from Ruhija.
Getting to Cuckooland for Your Gorilla Safari
The camp is reached by road. From Kabale, or from the Ishasha gate of Queen Elizabeth National Park, the drive takes about two and a half hours either way, much of it on dirt. A four wheel drive vehicle is the sensible choice, and in the rainy months you will want one for the final stretch. Most travellers come with a driver guide as part of a longer safari linking Bwindi with Queen Elizabeth or Lake Bunyonyi.
Flying shortens the trip from Entebbe, with scheduled flights to the Kihihi and Kisoro airstrips followed by a long road transfer. Our getting to Bwindi page covers routes and timings, and the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda page explains what the wet seasons do to roads and trails here.
Cuckooland Lodge FAQ
Is Cuckooland Lodge still open?
We could not confirm it. The lodge website was offline when we checked, and recent first hand reports are scarce. Some operators still list it, so ask a licensed safari company to confirm availability in writing before paying a deposit.
How much does Cuckooland cost per night?
No current rate is published. When the camp opened it quoted around US$100 per person full board, and later guest reports mention paying roughly US$150. Treat these as rough guides only and get a fresh quote. Ruhija gorilla permits cost US$800 for foreign non residents, US$700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East Africans, with a US$600 non resident rate announced for April, May and November; see our Uganda gorilla permits page.
How far is Cuckooland from the Ruhija gorilla trekking start?
About 15 km, which most sources put at 30 to 40 minutes by four wheel drive.
Is Cuckooland suitable for older travellers?
Only for those who are steady on their feet. A steep path of about ten minutes links the car park and the tents, and the climb back up is the hard part.
Is there electricity and Wi Fi at Cuckooland?
Recent listings mention electricity and charging points, but older reports describe tents without electricity and weak phone signal. Bring a battery pack and do not count on internet.
Can I do the gorilla habituation experience from Cuckooland?
Not easily. In Uganda the habituation experience runs from Rushaga in southern Bwindi, several hours by road from Ruhija. A lodge near Rushaga makes far more sense for it.
