Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge is a mid range lodge in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, only a few minutes by car from the Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing point. Safari companies book it for Ruhija gorilla trekking with the Bitukura, Oruzogo, Mukiza and Kyaguriro families. It offers en suite cottages on the ridge, some with fireplaces, and it still takes guests through major booking sites.
One word of warning before you book. Ruhija has several places with near identical names, among them Ruhija Gorilla Lodge, Ruhija Gorilla Guest House, Ruhija Gorilla Friends Resort and the Ruhija Rest Camp. They are not all the same property. When you get a quote, check the exact name, and ask your operator to confirm it is the lodge described here.
Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge Location and Trailhead Access
The lodge stands on the high ridge at Ruhija, on the remote north eastern side of Bwindi, looking out over the forest canopy toward the Virunga volcanoes on clear days. Its main selling point is distance. For Ruhija gorilla trekking, few lodges get you to the ranger post faster, and guests have long reported that the start points for families such as Kyaguriro lie very close by.
That proximity buys time. You can eat breakfast at a normal pace, collect a packed lunch and still be at the briefing early, which helps on cold, misty mornings.
Ruhija sits at around 2,300 metres, the highest of Bwindi’s four trekking bases. Nights are cold all year. Expect cloud in the valleys at dawn and the occasional afternoon downpour, even in the drier months.
Cottages and Rooms at This Ruhija Gorilla Lodge
Accommodation is in separate en suite cottages, each with a deck or balcony. Operator listings describe three grades. The superior cottages each have a fireplace, and guests single these out as the ones to ask for in the cold season. Deluxe and standard rooms are simpler, mostly set up with twin beds.
The room count is less clear. Some operators list eight cottages, others four superior, four deluxe and six standard rooms, and one directory says fifteen. The lodge may have grown over time, or listings may be copying each other’s errors. If you are travelling as a group, ask your operator how many units are available before you plan around it.
Older guest descriptions mention cottages with canvas sides under metal roofs, which keeps the forest sounds close but also lets the cold in. Beds come with extra blankets and hot water bottles, and toilets are flush with hot and cold showers.
Food, Bar and Facilities for Your Gorilla Trekking Stay
Meals are served in the main lodge, where operators list a menu mixing Ugandan, European, Indian and Chinese dishes, a stocked bar with wine and beer, a fireplace, a small library of books on Africa and a gift shop selling local crafts. Laundry, daily housekeeping and parking are also listed.
Reviews of the food are split. Some guests have praised multi course dinners; others found the choice limited or the packed lunch thin. On trek day, ask the kitchen the night before for a fuller lunch and carry snacks of your own, because Ruhija treks can run long.
Facilities are where expectations need managing. Listings advertise free Wi Fi, satellite TV and card payments. Guest reports over the years describe electricity available only for set hours in the morning and evening, and hot water that was not always reliable. Treat Wi Fi as occasional, charge everything while the electricity is on, and carry some cash in case the card machine is down.
Staff are the most consistent strength in guest feedback, with managers and waiters often named for going out of their way. Value and housekeeping draw the sharpest criticism in the weaker reviews, so read recent feedback before committing.
Gorilla Trekking Safari from Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge
A gorilla trekking safari from this lodge starts with the short transfer to the Ruhija ranger post for the morning briefing. Rangers divide trekkers into groups of up to eight and assign each group a habituated family. In Ruhija the families are Bitukura, Oruzogo and Mukiza, with the Kyaguriro research group opened to visitors at times.

Treks in Ruhija tend to go down before they come up. From the ridge the trails drop into steep valleys, so the return climb at altitude is the hard part. Two to six hours is a fair range. Hire a porter at the gate and bring gardening gloves for the nettles; the gorilla trekking packing list covers the rest.
The rules come from UWA. You have one hour with the family once you find them and must keep at least 10 metres away. Trekkers must be 15 or older, and anyone with a cough or cold will be asked to stay behind. Sightings are very likely in Bwindi but never guaranteed.
Your permit must be for Ruhija. Permits are sector specific, and the drive to Buhoma or Rushaga takes hours, so check before you pay. Our guide to booking Uganda gorilla permits explains how. For a sense of how hard the day can be, see the trekking difficulty and fitness guide.
Birding Tours, Forest Walks and Day Trips near the Lodge
Ruhija is Bwindi’s best birding sector, and a spare day here is well used. The Mubwindi Swamp birding hike descends through montane forest to a swamp known for the African green broadbill and other Albertine Rift endemics. It takes most of a day; our Bwindi birding guide lists what to look for.

Shorter guided forest walks look for butterflies, monkeys and smaller birds near the ridge. Community visits to Bakiga farming families and to Batwa communities can be arranged; read about the Batwa people before you go. Lake Bunyonyi, around two hours away by road, is a popular stop after the trek for canoeing and a slower day or two.
Who Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge Suits
The lodge suits travellers whose priority is a short morning transfer and a quiet sector, and who are comfortable with mid range standards that vary. Couples who ask for a superior cottage with a fireplace get the best of it. Birders staying two or three nights also do well here.
It is a weaker choice for anyone who needs dependable Wi Fi, round the clock electricity or step free access; the grounds sit on a slope, and no accessibility information is published. Families with children under 15 should note that only older children can trek, so someone will stay behind.
Getting to Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge
From Kampala or Entebbe the drive takes around nine to ten hours via Mbarara and Kabale, finishing on a murram road up to the ridge. From Kabale town, allow about two hours. Kigali is closer than Kampala; crossing at Katuna, the trip usually takes four to six hours, which suits gorilla trekking from Kigali and itineraries that add Rwanda gorilla trekking.
Charter and scheduled flights reach Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips, each two to three hours by road from Ruhija. The full options are in our getting to Bwindi guide.
How It Compares with Other Ruhija Safari Lodges
| Lodge | Strength | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge | Shortest transfer | Variable upkeep |
| Bakiga Lodge | Full board, charity | Steep steps |
| Agandi Eco Lodge | Family cottage, camping | Basic finishes |
Bakiga Lodge is about ten minutes further along the ridge, owned by a water charity and sold on a full board basis. Agandi Eco Lodge offers tree nests, a family cottage and a campsite. Gorilla Mist Camp and Trekkers Tavern Cottages are two more Ruhija options in a similar bracket. If your permit is for Buhoma rather than Ruhija, look at Buhoma Lodge or Engagi Lodge instead. Every sector is compared in our Bwindi safari lodges guide, and the best time for gorilla trekking page explains how the wet months change trail conditions.
Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge FAQ

Yes, as far as current listings show. It remains bookable on major hotel sites and continues to receive guest reviews. Ask your operator to confirm availability, and the exact property name, when you request a quote.
How much does Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge cost per night?
Published rates vary widely by channel and season. Operator listings have quoted around US$186 for a single and US$312 for a double on full board, while hotel booking sites have shown lower room prices of roughly US$120 to US$250 per night, often with breakfast only. Confirm the meal basis before comparing. A Ruhija gorilla permit is extra: currently US$800 for foreign non residents, US$700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.
Which gorilla families can I trek from the lodge?
Any Ruhija family: Bitukura, Oruzogo and Mukiza, plus Kyaguriro when it is open to visitors. UWA rangers assign families at the morning briefing, so you cannot pick one in advance.
Is there Wi Fi and electricity at the lodge?
Wi Fi is advertised, but guests have reported electricity limited to set hours and unreliable connections. Charge devices whenever the electricity is on and bring a portable battery pack.
Which room should I ask for?
A superior cottage, if available. These have fireplaces, which make a real difference on cold Ruhija nights.
Is Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge the same as Ruhija Gorilla Lodge?
Not necessarily. Several Ruhija properties use similar names, and their websites and listings do not always match. Check the full name and location with your operator before you pay.
