Bwindi Guest House: The Hospital Guest House in Buhoma

Lodges

Bwindi Guest House is the guest house of Bwindi Community Hospital in Buhoma, a group of simple, full board houses on the hospital grounds and the park edge, a few minutes from the Buhoma gorilla trekking briefing. Travellers book it directly with the hospital or through an operator. It is also listed as the Bwindi Community Hospital Guest House or Bwindi Community Guest House, and every night spent there helps fund the hospital.

Where the Guest House Sits for Buhoma Gorilla Trekking

The guest house stands on the grounds of Bwindi Community Hospital in Buhoma trading centre, on the northern edge of the park. Its houses are spread across the slope rather than gathered in one compound. The group closest to the forest, on the park boundary, is only a few minutes’ walk from the Uganda Wildlife Authority visitor centre where every Buhoma trek starts, and the others are a short walk or drive further up.

That position matters on trek morning. Guests in the park edge houses can usually walk to the briefing; those in the upper houses may want a lift, particularly after rain. Ask which property you are in when you book.

The hospital was founded by the American doctor Scott Kellermann, whose work with the Batwa grew into a full hospital, and the guest house was once his family home. The setting is a working hospital town, not a remote lodge clearing. Expect hospital traffic, school children and market days. For more on the sector, see our Buhoma gorilla trekking guide.

Houses and Rooms at the Hospital Guest House

The hospital now groups its rooms into three properties. Many of the homes were built by long term volunteers and later handed to the guest house to run, which is why every building looks different.

Monkey House. The original hub, with nine rooms, six of them self contained, set up as single, double, twin or triple. It holds the main dining room and an open sided banda where a campfire can be lit in the evening.
Mama Diane’s Guest House. Thirteen rooms across four cottages and one large home, with a central dining space. It suits large groups who want to stay together.
Nkwenda Gorilla Property. Five rooms in four homes on the edge of the park, with forest views and the shortest walk to the trek briefing.

Older operator pages describe the houses by earlier names such as Lower, Middle and Upper Gorilla House, Paul and Barbara’s House and the Blackie Shacky cottage. Those are the same buildings. Some still have small kitchens or kitchenettes, a reminder that they were built as volunteers’ homes.

Rooms are plain and clean, with mosquito nets, decent beds and hot water. Some share bathrooms, so if a private bathroom matters, ask for a self contained room.

Meals, Campfires and Shared Spaces on Your Safari Stay

Stays are sold full board. Meals are served year round in the Monkey House dining room, and Mama Diane’s has its own central dining space for groups. The food is home cooking, Ugandan and Western, rather than a lodge menu, and meals are eaten together. At dinner you might sit beside a visiting surgeon, a nursing student’s sponsor or a family on their first safari, and that mix is part of the appeal.

Ask the kitchen for a packed lunch the evening before your trek.

The hospital’s guest house website lists round the clock electricity, hot water in every room and unlimited Wi Fi for Mama Diane’s; standards vary between the older houses, so check the property you are booked into. A troop of red tailed monkeys visits the Monkey House garden on most days, and the park edge houses sometimes get unexpected visitors from the forest. Treat both as a bonus. Free parking, laundry and night security round out the practical side.

The Hospital Tour and Where Your Money Goes

Every guest is offered a free hospital tour or a visit to the nursing school on any day of the week. It is worth an hour of a rest day. You see the wards and the training school, and staff explain how the hospital grew from small beginnings into the main health centre for the area.

The hospital says all spending at the guest house goes towards medical care, supporting its doctors and volunteers, the nursing school and the Batwa Development Program. If you want your accommodation money to do something useful in Buhoma, this is one of the most direct ways to do it. Some guests stay on as volunteers, and the hospital handles that separately.

Gorilla Trekking from the Guest House

Gorilla trekking from the guest house works like any Buhoma stay. You report to the UWA visitor centre early for the briefing, rangers form groups of up to eight, and each group is sent to one habituated family. Buhoma’s families include Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura. The full list is on our Bwindi gorilla groups page.

Your permit must be for Buhoma. Permits are sector specific, and the southern sectors are several hours away by road. The guest house says it can help with permit reservations. The permit itself is booked through a licensed operator that is a recognised member of AUTO, the Association of Uganda Tour Operators, so ask which operator the guest house uses; our gorilla permit guide explains how.

Once you reach the gorillas you get one hour, keeping at least 10 metres away under UWA rules, and nobody under 15 may trek. Treks in Buhoma can finish before lunch or run through the afternoon. A porter, gloves for the nettles, gaiters and a rain jacket all help; see our gorilla trekking packing list.

Buhoma Tours Beyond the Gorillas

Because the hospital grew out of work with the Batwa, a Batwa cultural visit fits naturally into a stay here. The Buhoma community walk covers village life, and the Munyaga waterfall trail inside the park is a gentle guided nature walk with a ranger.

Birders can work the forest edge from the park boundary houses; see birding in Bwindi. The guest house also points guests to a hands on coffee tour at a nearby estate, mountain biking on village and forest trails, and the walk across the park between Buhoma and the southern sectors. Queen Elizabeth National Park is a few hours north for a game drive on the way in or out.

Who the Guest House Suits on a Gorilla Trip

It suits independent travellers, self drivers, volunteers, families and groups who want a clean, safe bed near the trailhead at a modest price and do not need lodge polish. It is good for anyone who enjoys talking to the people who live and work in Buhoma.

Travellers wanting fine dining, a view from a private deck or a spa should book one of the forest edge lodges. Light sleepers should know that a hospital never fully sleeps.

Its nearest equivalents are the other cause driven budget stays. The Buhoma Community Rest Camp sits right at the gate and adds a campsite, while the CTPH Gorilla Conservation Camp funds gorilla health work. For more comfort, Engagi Lodge is midrange, and Bwindi Lodge and Buhoma Lodge are the upmarket choices by the forest. Every option is in our guide to Bwindi lodges by sector.

Getting to the Guest House for Your Bwindi Safari

The nearest tarmac is about 40 km away, so the last part of any road trip is on murram. From Kampala or Entebbe, allow eight to ten hours by road, or break the drive at Queen Elizabeth National Park and enter Buhoma from the north through Kihihi. Self drivers should use a sturdy four wheel drive, especially in the wet months. Flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi reach Kihihi airstrip in about an hour, followed by a transfer of roughly one and a half hours.

Our guide on how to get to Bwindi covers every route, and the best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda explains the dry and wet months.

Bwindi Guest House FAQ

Is Bwindi Community Guest House the same as Bwindi Guest House?

As far as we can tell, yes. Every source we found for that name leads back to the Bwindi Community Hospital guest house in Buhoma. If a booking site shows the two as separate listings, check the contact details match the hospital before paying.

How much does Bwindi Guest House cost?

The guest house’s published full board rates have been around US$80 for a single room and around US$150 for a double or twin, per night. Rates can change, so confirm with the guest house. The Buhoma gorilla permit is extra: US$800 for foreign non residents, US$700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens, with a US$600 low season rate announced for April, May and November.

Can I walk to the gorilla trekking briefing from the guest house?

From the park edge property, yes, in a few minutes. From the houses higher up the hospital grounds it is a longer walk, and a lift is easier on a wet morning.

Do I have to volunteer to stay there?

No. The guest house takes tourists, volunteers and medical visitors alike. Volunteering is arranged separately through the hospital.

Is the guest house good for families and groups?

Yes. Mama Diane’s and some of the older houses can be taken as whole units, which works well for families and groups. Children under 15 cannot trek gorillas but can join the hospital tour, village walk or birding.

Is there Wi Fi and electricity?

Mama Diane’s is listed with round the clock electricity and unlimited Wi Fi. Facilities in the other houses vary, so pack a head torch and a spare battery pack.
