Bwindi Orugano Lodge is a small, locally owned cottage lodge in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, about a 10 minute walk from the UWA office where Nkuringo gorilla trekking begins. Guests usually book it with a Nkuringo or Rushaga permit on a southern Uganda gorilla safari. It sits on a hillside in Kisoro District facing the Virunga volcanoes.
Orugano is one of the newer places on the ridge, also marketed as Orugano Bwindi Lodge, and it is trading with an active website, phone line and listings on the main booking platforms. Its founder and managing director, Bob Kabaziguruka, is named on the lodge’s own site. Review numbers are still small, and the published details do not always agree, so this guide separates what the lodge states from what agents claim.
Where Orugano Sits for Nkuringo Gorilla Trekking
Nkuringo is the smallest and steepest of Bwindi’s four trekking sectors. The village, lodges and park office line Nteko Ridge, while the gorilla families feed in the valley far below. Bwindi Orugano Lodge stands on the slope close to that office, which means you can walk to the morning briefing without a vehicle. Few things make a trek morning simpler.
From the cottages, the forest falls away on one side. On the other, the Virunga chain fills the southern skyline: Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabinyo on the Uganda and Rwanda border, with Congo’s peaks beyond on clear days. Morning is the best time to see them, before cloud builds.
The lodge also markets itself as a base for Rushaga, the neighbouring sector to the east, about 40 minutes away by road. That flexibility helps when Nkuringo permits are sold out for your dates. Expect the drive to take longer after rain, since the road between the two sectors is unpaved and hilly.
Cottages and Rooms for a Nkuringo Safari Stay
Rooms are individual cottages built largely from timber, several of them reportedly from eucalyptus grown on the property, each with its own bathroom, a hot shower and a balcony or terrace facing the forest. The lodge’s own room list names three types. A deluxe double cottage and a deluxe single cottage each cover about 50 square metres. A deluxe family room doubles that, with three beds and two bathrooms.
How many units there are is less clear. Booking platforms list eight, one operator says ten, and a rental site gives a much larger bedroom count that appears to be an error. Around eight is the most consistent figure. Either way it is a small place, so space goes early in the June to September and December to February peaks.
Guest feedback so far, from a modest number of reviews, leans heavily on service: staff who clean muddy boots after the trek, hot water bottles in the beds on cold nights, and a fire outside in the evening. Those details matter at Nkuringo’s altitude, where nights are chilly all year.

Meals, Wifi and Lodge Facilities on a Bwindi Trip
Stays are on full board. The kitchen, run by an executive chef with long hotel experience according to the lodge, serves Ugandan and international dishes made with local produce, in an open dining area that looks toward the volcanoes. Dinner is usually three courses. On trek days breakfast is early and a packed lunch goes with you into the forest.
The lodge advertises free wifi across its grounds and accepts Visa and Mastercard, which is still unusual in rural Kisoro. One operator says the lodge uses solar energy; the lodge does not describe its electricity setup, so carry a battery pack in case of cloudy spells. Check in is from midday and check out by 10 in the morning.
Other facilities are modest: a bar, an outdoor fire pit, parking for safari vehicles and help arranging permits and transfers. No accessibility features are published, and the property sits on a slope, so travellers with limited mobility should ask about paths and the walk to the dining area before booking.
Who an Orugano Lodge Safari Suits
Orugano fits travellers on a mid range gorilla safari who want to be close to the Nkuringo trailhead and enjoy personal service in a small place. Couples, solo travellers and small families all work well here; the family room is one of the better set ups for parents with teenagers in southern Bwindi. Travellers coming from Rwanda also benefit, since Nkuringo is one of the closest Bwindi sectors to Kigali.
It suits fewer people if you want a large lodge with a spa and a long list of facilities, or if you prefer the established reputation of an older property. Children under 15 cannot trek gorillas, so a younger child means one adult staying behind on trek morning.
Gorilla Trekking and Habituation from Orugano
Nkuringo gorilla trekking has the toughest reputation in Bwindi. After the briefing at the UWA office, groups of up to eight descend from the ridge toward the Nkuringo, Bushaho, Christmas or Posho families, then make the same climb back. Many treks take three to eight hours in all. Once with the gorillas you get one hour, keeping a distance of at least 10 metres as UWA requires.
Advice from people who have done it is consistent. Hire a porter at the start, even if you think you will not need one; the climb back to the ridge is long. Wear gaiters and gloves, carry two litres of water, and take a walking stick. Our Nkuringo gorilla trekking guide covers the families and the trek day, and the packing list covers kit.
For a gentler day, or if Nkuringo is full, Orugano can arrange the drive to Rushaga gorilla trekking, which has more families and usually gentler slopes. Rushaga is also the only sector running the gorilla habituation experience, four hours with a family still being accustomed to people. Permits for both are issued by UWA per sector; read our gorilla permits guide before fixing dates.

Volcano Views, Lake Mutanda and Other Tours from Nkuringo
Beyond gorillas, the lodge runs or arranges several nature and cultural tours. Closest to home are the Nkuringo village walk through farms and homesteads, a Batwa community visit with the forest people who lived in Bwindi before it became a park, and the Buniga forest walk on a community trail at the forest edge.
The longest is the Ivy River trail, a guided hike of about 13 kilometres through the forest toward Buhoma, often done as a one way walk with the vehicle sent round by road. It is a good choice for birders and for anyone who wants a full day inside the forest.
Further afield, Lake Mutanda is roughly an hour away for dugout canoe trips with the volcanoes as a backdrop. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, near Kisoro, offers golden monkey tracking and day hikes up Gahinga, Sabinyo or Muhabura. These make sensible rest days between a Nkuringo trek and a habituation day in Rushaga.

Orugano Compared with Other Southern Bwindi Lodges
On Nteko Ridge, Orugano sits in the middle of the range. The Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite is cheaper and simpler, while community part owned luxury lodges on the same ridge cost far more. Over in Rushaga, Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge is a similar size, and Chameleon Hill Lodge on Lake Mutanda suits travellers who prefer a lakeside base. Orugano’s advantages are its short walk to the office, its small size and its family room. For a wider view of the choices, see our Bwindi safari lodges guide.
If your permit ends up in Ruhija instead, small options there include Trekkers Tavern Cottages and Gift of Nature Lodge. In Buhoma, Gorilla Forest Camp sits close to the trailhead.
Getting to Bwindi Orugano Lodge for Your Safari
Many guests come from Rwanda. Kigali to Nkuringo is about four to five hours by road via the Cyanika border and Kisoro, and the lodge can arrange a private transfer. From Kampala or Entebbe the drive is about nine to ten hours through Mbarara and Kabale, usually broken with a night on Lake Bunyonyi or in Kisoro.
Flying is faster. Light aircraft from Entebbe land at Kisoro airstrip, roughly an hour to an hour and a half from the ridge by road. The last section climbs on a steep murram road that turns slippery in the wet months of March to May and October to November. Full route details are on our getting to Bwindi page, and the best time for gorilla trekking guide covers seasons.
