Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge: Mid Range Base for Rushaga Gorilla Trekking

Lodges

Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge is a mid range lodge on the hillside above the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, roughly ten minutes on foot from the Rushaga gate where gorilla trekking briefings take place. Most travellers book it through a safari company as the base for a Rushaga gorilla trek or the habituation experience. The lodge sits in Kisoro District in southwestern Uganda, facing the forest across farmed hills.

Farms run right up to the forest edge along much of Bwindi’s boundary, which is the view most Rushaga lodges look out over. This is a general Bwindi photo, not the lodge itself.

Sector. Rushaga, southern Bwindi, Kisoro District. Booking sites list the locality as Bugambira.

The name comes from Rufumbira, the language spoken around Kisoro, and the lodge translates it as a cool, comfortable home. Fair enough. At this altitude evenings are cool for most of the year.

Where Ichumbi Sits for Rushaga Gorilla Trekking

For Rushaga gorilla trekking, location is the main thing Ichumbi has going for it. The lodge stands on a slope just outside the park boundary, and the walk down to the Uganda Wildlife Authority post at the Rushaga gate takes about ten minutes. One operator page calls it a ten minute drive instead; either way you are not facing the dawn transfer that guests staying at Lake Mutanda or in Kisoro town have to make.

Rushaga holds more habituated gorilla families than any other part of Bwindi. Rangers assign trekkers to groups such as Nshongi, Mishaya, Bweza, Busingye and Kahungye at the morning briefing, eight visitors to a family. Some days the family is feeding close to the farms. Other days the trackers find it two valleys away, and a starting point needs a short drive, which the lodge can arrange for a fee.

A quiet point worth knowing: Ichumbi is also within driving range of the Nkuringo trailheads, so if your permit ends up being for Nkuringo gorilla trekking instead, staying here still works. Expect a longer, earlier transfer on that morning.

Cottages and Rooms at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge

Rooms at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge are individual cottages built from local stone and timber, each named after a bird you might see from its balcony. Names that appear across the lodge’s own photos and operator listings include Canary, Cisticola, Warbler, Sunbird, Whydah, Robin Chat, Ibis, Turaco and Hamerkop. Furniture is made by carpenters from the surrounding villages.

Every cottage has a private bathroom with a hot shower and flush toilet, plus a balcony behind glass doors that let in plenty of light. Most face the forest; some look over terraced farmland toward the Virunga volcanoes. Some of the larger family and deluxe units have a bathtub.

Room counts are where the listings fall apart. One operator says nine rooms, another says six cottages and four standard rooms, a third says thirteen. The lodge does not publish a figure. If you are travelling as a larger group, ask your safari company to confirm how many cottages are free on your dates rather than relying on any number online.

Single cottage. One guest, the usual pick for solo trekkers.
Double or twin cottage. The standard unit for couples and friends.
Triple cottage. Three beds, or an extra bed added to a standard room.
Family cottage. Space for four, with double, twin or family bed layouts.

Food, Electricity and Facilities on a Rushaga Safari Stay

Meals are served in the main house restaurant, a mix of Ugandan and international dishes made with produce bought from nearby farms. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free meals can be arranged with notice. On trek day the kitchen packs a lunch, and breakfast starts early enough for the briefing.

Full board here means breakfast, lunch, dinner and bottled water in the room. Sodas, beer and wine are charged on top, so check your quote if you expected drinks to be included.

The lodge lists a regular electricity supply with a standby generator behind it, and operator listings say solar panels heat much of the water. Wi Fi reaches the lounge and central area rather than every cottage, so plan on answering email at the bar. Other services include laundry, a small gift shop of local crafts, parking, night security and a campfire on cold evenings. Staff clean muddy boots after the trek, which matters more than it sounds when you have one pair and a second trek the next day.

Guest feedback across booking sites follows a clear pattern. Staff and the short walk to the gate earn the most praise. The complaints are about slow restaurant service on busy nights, rooms that some found plain for the price, and hot water running short when the lodge is full. None of that is unusual in Rushaga, though it is worth setting expectations: this is a comfortable mid range lodge, not a luxury one.

Who Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge Suits

Ichumbi works best for travellers who want a proper room and a short walk to the gate without paying for a top tier lodge. Couples and solo trekkers on a mid range gorilla safari make up most of its guests, and the single cottage rate makes it fairer than many lodges for people travelling alone.

Families do well here too. Children under five stay free, children aged six to fourteen pay half when sharing with parents, and babysitting can be arranged while the adults trek. No one under fifteen can trek gorillas in Uganda, so younger children will stay at the lodge or join a village walk instead.

Who might look elsewhere? Travellers wanting fireplaces in every room, butler service and all inclusive drinks will find more of that at the higher priced lodges near Nkuringo or Buhoma. And anyone with mobility limits should ask about the paths: the site is on a slope, and the lodge does not publish accessibility details.

Gorilla Trekking and Habituation From Ichumbi

A gorilla trekking day from Ichumbi starts with an early breakfast and the walk down to the Rushaga gate for the 7:30 briefing. Permits are issued for a sector and a date, so the permit must say Rushaga for this lodge to make sense. Book the permit first, through a licensed operator or the gorilla permit guide on this site, then book the room to match.

Treks take anything from under an hour to most of the day, depending on where the family slept. Once the gorillas are found, the group gets one hour with them and must keep at least 10 metres away, which is the Uganda Wildlife Authority rule; gorillas do not always cooperate, and rangers will move you back. Porters wait at the gate. Hiring one costs little, helps a local family, and makes the steep return climb far easier.

Rushaga is the only place in Uganda offering the gorilla habituation experience, which allows up to four visitors to spend up to four hours with a family still getting used to people. Staying at Ichumbi makes that long day simpler, since you walk back to a hot shower rather than a two hour drive.

Other Tours and Activities Around the Lodge

Days before or after the trek fill easily. The lodge runs a nature walk along the forest edge to the Rushaga falls that stays outside the park, plus a ranger guided forest walk inside it. Birders can book a guided birding tour in the Rushaga forest; Bwindi records about 350 species, including Albertine Rift endemics such as the Rwenzori turaco and the handsome francolin.

The community walk is the cheapest outing and often the one guests talk about afterwards: coffee growing, local cooking, basket weaving and a visit to a Batwa family. The Batwa cultural experience covers the forest life the Batwa lived before the park was created. In the evening the lodge can bring in a local dance group on request.

Further out, canoeing on Lake Mutanda is roughly an hour or more by road, and golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga can be added from Kisoro. Lake Bunyonyi makes a good rest stop on the road north.

Getting to Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge

Most guests arrive by road. From Kampala or Entebbe the drive runs through Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale and takes eight to ten hours, best split with a night at Lake Bunyonyi. A 4×4 helps on the final stretch, especially in the rainy months. From Kigali the trip is shorter: four to five hours through the Cyanika border, which is why many visitors flying into Rwanda pick Rushaga. Our guide to gorilla trekking in Uganda from Kigali covers the border routine.

Flying saves a full day. Scheduled light aircraft go from Entebbe or Kajjansi to Kisoro airstrip, and the lodge or your operator collects you there for a road transfer of roughly an hour and a half. The getting there guide compares the options, and the best time for gorilla trekking page explains how the wet months affect the road.

How Ichumbi Compares With Other Rushaga Lodges

Rushaga has lodges at every level, and Ichumbi sits in the middle. Nshongi Camp is cheaper and simpler, right beside the gate, with bandas and a camping area that suit backpackers and tight budgets. Bweza Gorilla Lodge is a smaller five room property with fireplaces and a spa room, aimed a little higher, and Gorilla Leisure Lodge goes further upmarket with twelve stone cottages. Over the ridge at Nkuringo, the Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite has long been a budget favourite with views over the Virungas.

Choosing between them is mostly about budget and how much comfort matters after a long trek. The full list of options by sector is on our Bwindi safari lodges page, and the gorilla trekking packing list covers what to bring whichever you pick.

Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge FAQ

How far is Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge from the Rushaga briefing point?

About ten minutes on foot, according to the lodge. That puts it among the closest mid range lodges to the Rushaga gate, so on trek day you can walk down rather than wait for a vehicle.

How much does a night at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge cost?

The lodge’s published rack rates for foreign non residents on full board run from roughly US$180 for a single cottage to about US$280 for a double, with triple and family cottages higher; East African residents pay much less, and half board or bed and breakfast cuts the price a little. Rates include VAT and change from time to time, so treat these as a guide and get a dated quote. Gorilla permits are separate: US$800 for foreign non residents in high season, US$600 in April, May and November, and US$1,500 for habituation, set to rise to US$1,800 from the coming 1 January under a UWA notice.

Can Ichumbi book my gorilla permit?

The lodge’s sister company, Nshongi Tours, arranges trips, and many guests book through other licensed safari companies. Either way, the permit must be for the Rushaga sector to match the lodge, and it is paid in full when booked.

Is there Wi Fi and electricity in the rooms?

Electricity is on in the rooms, with a standby generator for cuts. Wi Fi covers the main house and central area, not every cottage, and speeds drop when the lodge is busy.

Is Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge good for a family gorilla safari?

Yes, with one limit. Family cottages, child rates and babysitting make it easy for parents, but children under fifteen cannot trek gorillas, so plan a community walk or lodge day for them.

What should I pack for a stay here?

A warm layer for evenings, rain gear, gloves for nettles and boots you can get muddy. The lodge will clean your boots, but bring a second pair of socks for each trek.
