Mahogany Springs is an upper midrange lodge of stone and thatch suites in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a five to ten minute walk from the park gate where Buhoma gorilla trekking begins. It is open and taking guests, most of whom book it through a safari operator as part of a gorilla trip. The lodge sits in gardens above the Munyaga River, facing the forest.
Where Mahogany Springs Sits for Buhoma Gorilla Trekking
The lodge is built on a slope above the Munyaga River, the stream (spelled Munyanga by the lodge itself) that runs along the park boundary at Buhoma. Across the water the forest rises straight up, so the view from most terraces is canopy rather than farmland. Mornings often start in cloud. By ten the valley usually clears.
What sets it apart is the walk. The Buhoma gorilla trekking briefing at the Uganda Wildlife Authority office by the gate is close enough to reach on foot in five to ten minutes, and the lodge will drive you if the path is wet. Compare that with the southern sectors, where a permit for the wrong area can mean leaving at five in the morning for a long drive before the briefing.
Buhoma sits at roughly 1,500 metres, lower and warmer than Ruhija or Nkuringo. Habituated families here include Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura, and the rangers assign groups at the briefing itself.

Suites and Rooms for a Bwindi Gorilla Safari
All accommodation is in suites, set along stone paths down through the garden. The lodge’s own site currently lists twelve Superior Deluxe Suites and two Premium Deluxe Suites. Older operator pages quote nine or ten units, because the lodge has added rooms over the years, so do not be thrown by the different counts.
Superior suites have high ceilings, a double, twin or triple layout, a private terrace and a large bathroom with a walk in terracotta shower. Every suite has mosquito nets, electric light, charging points and hot running water. The honeymoon suite follows the same design with a bigger bed and a bathtub beside the shower.
Families have two choices. The family suites, including a newer one named after the river, have two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a living room opening onto a terrace over the water. The premium suites go further: two bedrooms with king beds, a freestanding bath, a fireplace and a hot tub on the terrace, plus extras such as butler service and spa credit according to operator listings.
Expect comfortable rather than glossy. Guest feedback over many years praises the space and the views, while some recent visitors call the superior rooms a little dated. There is no air conditioning or fan, and afternoons in the dry months can feel warm; nights cool down, and staff bring hot water bottles when asked.
Food, Spa and Facilities at Mahogany Springs
The main building has a restaurant, a fully stocked bar and a wide terrace around the front, the place most guests end up at sundown. Inside, a living room with a fire, books and board games fills wet afternoons. Cooking is international with Ugandan touches, led by a chef who rose to general manager, and vegetables come partly from the lodge’s own garden.
Operators describe a weekly barbecue night and afternoon tea with pastries, and you can ask for a private dinner by the river or on your terrace. On trek day the kitchen packs lunch. Tell the lodge about dietary needs when you book rather than on arrival.
A small spa offers massages and facials, with pre and post trek foot treatments that make sense after a long day in muddy boots. Operator listings name the London skincare brand Opatra as the partner. There is also a gift shop selling crafts and clothing made locally.
Laundry is available, and guest reports regularly mention staff cleaning boots after the trek. Wi Fi is offered in the main areas, though speeds in Buhoma drop in heavy rain, so do not plan on video calls.
Who Mahogany Springs Suits on a Gorilla Trekking Safari
It suits couples and families who want a comfortable, characterful base a short walk from the Buhoma gate, without paying top tier luxury rates. Honeymooners get the river suite. Families with a mix of ages do well here too, since a babysitter can be arranged for younger children while adults trek.
Less so for travellers who need step free access, who want modern hotel finishes, or who are on a tight budget. One more honest point: Buhoma is a working village, and guests sometimes hear music, drums or children from the houses nearby. Most find it part of the charm. Light sleepers should pack earplugs.
Gorilla Trekking from the Lodge in Buhoma
Trek day starts with an early breakfast and the short walk to the UWA briefing at about 7:30. Rangers divide permit holders into groups of no more than eight, try to match fitness to the family that slept nearest, and introduce the trackers who have been out since dawn.
A Buhoma gorilla trek can last one hour or six. Once the family is found, you get one hour with them, keeping at least 10 metres away under UWA rules, and nobody under 15 may trek. Anyone with a cold or cough is asked to stay behind, because gorillas catch human infections. Sightings are very likely here, though never guaranteed.

Hire a porter at the gate even if you feel fit. They carry the bag, steady you on wet clay and earn a living from the park. Gardening gloves for nettles, gaiters, long sleeves and a rain jacket all earn their place; our gorilla trekking packing list has the rest. Permits are sector specific, so check that yours says Buhoma before you confirm this lodge. For the four hour version with researchers, the gorilla habituation experience runs from Rushaga in the south.
Nature Walks, Birding and Community Tours Near the Lodge
The lodge has its own short programme, which makes a second night worthwhile. A two hour community tour with a local guide visits a traditional healer and a banana beer brewer, with the fee going to the village. The waterfall nature walk inside the park is booked locally and paid to UWA. And the head chef runs a tour of the vegetable garden for anyone curious about where dinner comes from.
Birding is strong right from the terrace. Bwindi has recorded around 350 bird species, 23 of them Albertine Rift endemics, and a good forest edge morning around Buhoma can turn up dozens. Our guide to birding in Bwindi covers the target species and trails.
Two community links stand out. A nursery and primary school founded by a former member of the housekeeping team sits about two minutes away, and the Ride4aWoman workshop, which trains local widows and sews the lodge’s curtains and cushions, is next door; both welcome visits. Guests can also plant an indigenous tree in the grounds if they ask before arrival. A Batwa cultural visit needs booking in advance.
Mahogany Springs Compared with Other Buhoma Safari Lodges
Buhoma has more lodges than any other sector, so compare before you choose. The table sets the main options side by side by tier and distance to the gate.
| Lodge | Tier | To the gate |
|---|---|---|
| Rest Camp | Budget | At the gate |
| CTPH Camp | Budget | About 2 km |
| Engagi Lodge | Midrange | Few minutes |
| Mahogany Springs | Upper midrange | 5 to 10 min walk |
| Buhoma Lodge | Upmarket | Short walk |
| Bwindi Lodge | Luxury | About 500 m |
If you want a pool and health club, Trackers Safari Lodge is five minutes up the road, and Buhoma Community Haven Lodge is a community run midrange choice above the village. For a similar budget with a smaller footprint, Engagi Lodge has eight cottages down the same river valley. A step up in price brings Buhoma Lodge on the park boundary, and the top of the market belongs to Bwindi Lodge and Gorilla Forest Camp. To save money, the Buhoma Community Rest Camp and the CTPH Gorilla Conservation Camp are both near the gate. Our guide to Bwindi lodges by sector covers the rest of the park.
Getting to Mahogany Springs and Planning the Trip
The quickest route is by air. Scheduled and charter flights from Entebbe reach Kihihi airstrip in about an hour to ninety minutes, and the road transfer to the lodge takes roughly another hour to an hour and a half. By road, Kampala to Buhoma is a long day of eight to ten hours through Mbarara and Rukungiri, much of it paved; most people break it with a night in Queen Elizabeth National Park, about five hours away, or after chimpanzee tracking in Kibale. From Kigali allow five to six hours through the Katuna border. Every route is set out on our getting to Bwindi page.
Most guests stay two or three nights, some as part of a longer trip that adds the Masai Mara or the Serengeti. June to September and December to February are the busiest months, when permits and rooms go first; the quieter, greener months are compared in our guide to the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda.
Mahogany Springs FAQ
How much does Mahogany Springs cost, and what does the gorilla permit add?
Operator listings put Mahogany Springs at roughly US$290 to US$420 per person sharing per night on full board, lower from March to May and in November, with single rooms costing more and the premium suites well above that. Rates usually include meals, bottled water and a drink with dinner. The Uganda gorilla permit is separate: US$800 for foreign non residents, US$700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens, with a low season rate of US$600 (US$500 for foreign residents) announced for April, May and November. Permits are paid in full when booked. Confirm current figures with your operator.
How far is Mahogany Springs from the Buhoma gorilla trekking start?
Five to ten minutes on foot, or about two minutes by car, to the UWA briefing point at the Buhoma gate.
Can children stay at Mahogany Springs?
Yes. The family suites have two bedrooms, and a babysitter can be arranged. Children under 15 cannot trek gorillas, but they can join the community tour, the garden tour and short walks while adults trek.
Is the lodge suitable for travellers with limited mobility?
Not ideal. The suites sit down a slope on stone steps without much level ground. Ask for a suite near the main building and discuss your needs with your operator before booking.
Is there Wi Fi and charging at Mahogany Springs?
Every suite has electric charging points. Wi Fi works in the main areas most of the time, though rain and cloud can slow it.
How many nights should I book at Mahogany Springs?
Two nights is the usual minimum, one before and one after the trek. Three lets you add the waterfall walk, birding or a community visit without rushing, or a second gorilla trek.
