A fly in gorilla safari in Uganda swaps the nine or ten hour drive from Entebbe for a scheduled light aircraft of about an hour to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip, followed by a short transfer to a lodge beside Bwindi. Most trips last three or four days, booked through a licensed operator who matches flight, permit and lodge. Kihihi serves the northern Buhoma and eastern Ruhija sectors, and Kisoro the southern sectors and Mgahinga.
Below are the flights explained, the airstrip that fits each permit, day by day itineraries and the practical parts that catch people out: the luggage limit, morning mist and the drive from the strip. Road routes to every sector are on our getting to Bwindi page, and private charters on Uganda helicopter tours.
How a Uganda Fly In Gorilla Safari Works From Entebbe
Where do you fly into Uganda for gorilla trekking? Entebbe International Airport, on Lake Victoria, is the country’s only international gateway, and every scheduled flight to the gorilla airstrips leaves from its domestic side. You land from overseas, sleep a night in Entebbe, and take the morning light aircraft south west the next day.
The trek itself does not change. A fly in gorilla safari buys time and energy: two long road days turn into two short flights, and you reach the lodge by late morning rather than after dark. On a trip of three or four days, that is the gap between a rushed visit and an easy one, and it matters most for older travellers, families and anyone stacking gorillas onto a safari elsewhere.
Charter flights are the other way in. Small operators such as Fly Uganda fly on demand, some from Kajjansi airfield between Kampala and Entebbe, and can drop you at strips the scheduled service skips. Helicopters go further still, landing at a few lodge pads.
Gorilla Trek Airstrips by Bwindi Sector: Kihihi, Kisoro and Charter Strips
Bwindi has four trekking sectors, hours apart by road, and your gorilla permit names one of them. The sector picks the airstrip, so the permit always comes first and the flight second.
| Sector | Airstrip | Road transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Buhoma | Kihihi | 1.5 to 2 hrs |
| Ruhija | Kihihi | 2.5 to 3 hrs |
| Rushaga | Kisoro | 1 to 2 hrs |
| Nkuringo | Kisoro | 1 to 2 hrs |
| Mgahinga | Kisoro | About 1 hr |
Kihihi lies on flat farmland north of the forest, about 46 kilometres from Buhoma. The road crosses tea estates before a last stretch of murram to the park gate. It is the obvious choice for Buhoma gorilla trekking, which has the widest range of lodges at the top end.
Kisoro is the southern gateway. Rushaga has more habituated families than any other sector and is the only place to book habituation, while Nkuringo pairs the widest views with the hardest climb. Mgahinga, Uganda’s slice of the Virunga volcanoes, is closest of all, under 20 kilometres from the strip.
Ruhija is the awkward one. You can reach it from Kihihi, but the climb up to the ridge is long and rough, so a fly in with Ruhija permits saves less time than the others. Charters can use Kayonza, a grass strip nearer Buhoma, though scheduled flights do not.

Fly In Gorilla Safari Flight Times, Rotations and Check In
Timetables move with the seasons, so treat these as the pattern rather than a schedule to book against. On a recent Aerolink timetable, the Kisoro flight left Entebbe at 07:00 and landed at 08:15, then turned straight round for Entebbe, with a second rotation leaving Entebbe mid morning from June to October. Kisoro’s strip was open from 07:30 to 11:00, which is why nothing flies out of the south in the afternoon.
Kihihi is busier. Morning flights run daily, and in many months a later rotation returns to Entebbe in the afternoon, which is what makes some two day plans possible. Return flights from Kihihi usually land in Entebbe around late morning or late afternoon, depending on the rotation.
Plan to reach the domestic check in at Entebbe at least an hour before departure. Ask your operator to send the confirmed flight times in writing a week before you travel, since a rotation can be merged with another on a quiet day. For flight specifics on a trek starting at the airport, our page on gorilla trekking from Entebbe compares flying with the road.
The 3 Day Fly In Gorilla Safari Itinerary
The 3 day fly in gorilla safari is the format most operators sell, and the one that works best for a single trek: one day in, one trek day, one day out, with a full night at the lodge on either side of the trek.
Before you book a day 3 international flight, ask your operator how often the return rotation runs late. Weather holds are not rare, and an evening departure from Entebbe is far safer than an afternoon one.
The same three days exist on the road. Our 3 day gorilla trekking safari in Uganda sets the road, air and Kigali versions next to each other.
The 2 Day Fly In Gorilla Trip and Its Risks
Some operators sell a 2 day fly in gorilla trip: fly to Kihihi on day one, trek on day two, catch the afternoon rotation back to Entebbe. It can be done. Of all the fly in plans, it fails most often.
The trek is the problem. Nobody knows how far the family has moved overnight, so the walk can finish at noon or at four. If your flight leaves mid afternoon, a long trek means missing it, and a missed light aircraft can mean an unplanned extra night at the lodge and a change fee. From Kisoro it is not possible at all, because the strip closes before lunch.
With only two days to spare, keep the trek on day two and a lodge night after it, then take the first rotation on day three. Or look at the road from Kigali, which puts southern Bwindi four to five hours away; see gorilla trekking in Uganda from Kigali.
Four and Five Day Fly In Gorilla Safari Variants
A fourth day on a fly in gorilla safari gives you a second activity by the forest without adding any road time. These versions turn up again and again, and our 4 day gorilla safari in Uganda page has more detail on each.
Fly In Gorilla and Wildlife Safaris Across Uganda
Light aircraft also link Bwindi with Uganda’s savanna and chimpanzee parks, so a fly in safari can cover a full circuit in a week. Kihihi doubles as the gateway to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, and flights reach the Mweya peninsula and Kasese for Kibale. Our Uganda safari guide covers each of those parks.
A common shape runs six to eight days: fly from Entebbe to Murchison Falls, landing at Bugungu or Pakuba, for a launch to the falls and game drives; on to Kibale for chimpanzee trekking; then Queen Elizabeth National Park; and Bwindi last, for the gorillas before the flight home. Many travellers fly only the long legs and drive the short ones, such as Queen Elizabeth to Buhoma through Ishasha, two to three hours that double as a game drive. The Murchison Falls safari guide covers the northern leg.
Kidepo Valley, in the far northeast, is the one park where flying is close to necessary; by road it is ten hours or more from Kampala, usually split over two days. Some fly in itineraries add two nights there after Bwindi.
For travellers with more budget than time, a private helicopter can link several parks in a day and land at lodge pads such as the one at Clouds on the Nkuringo ridge. That is a different product, priced per aircraft, and our Uganda helicopter tours page explains it.
Luggage, Weather and Airstrip Transfers on a Fly In Gorilla Trek
The flight is the easy part of a fly in gorilla trek. The details around it are what trip reports grumble about.
On the trek itself, the gear that travellers mention most is gaiters, against the biting ants on some trails, and gardening gloves for nettles and thorns. The gorilla trekking packing list goes through the rest within the 15 kg limit.

Lodges Near the Airstrips for a Fly In Gorilla Safari
On a fly in trip the lodge must sit in your permit’s sector and close enough to the strip that the transfer stays short. Most operators pair fly in guests with upper midrange or luxury lodges, though any lodge can meet a plane.
In Buhoma, through Kihihi, the choice is widest. Gorilla Forest Lodge is set within the park boundary itself, Bwindi Lodge, run by Volcanoes Safaris, faces the trees across the Munyaga River, and Mahogany Springs keeps its suites along the riverbank, a few minutes on foot from the gate. Trackers Safari Lodge and Buhoma Community Haven Lodge are good midrange picks.
In the south, through Kisoro, Chameleon Hill Lodge and Lake Mulehe Safari Lodge sit on lakes between the strip and the forest, handy for Rushaga and Mgahinga. Gorilla Valley Lodge is close to the Rushaga briefing point, while Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge and Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge stand on the Nkuringo ridge. Ruhija permit holders usually stay at Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge on the Ruhija ridge. Every lodge is listed by sector on our Bwindi safari lodges page; the top tier is compared in luxury gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda, and Uganda only luxury trips are laid out in our luxury gorilla safari in Uganda itineraries.

Best Months for a Fly In Gorilla Safari in Uganda
Flights and gorilla treks both run all year, so the question is which month suits a fly in gorilla trip best. Dry months bring firmer trails and steadier flying; wet months bring morning cloud, more delays and quieter lodges, plus a cheaper low season permit in April, May and November.
| Month | Trails | Flying | Permits |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Drier | Steady | Busy |
| February | Drier | Steady | Busy |
| March | Wet spells | Some mist | Moderate |
| April | Wettest | Delays likely | Low season |
| May | Very wet | Delays likely | Low season |
| June | Dry | Best | Peak |
| July | Dry | Best | Peak |
| August | Dry | Best | Peak |
| September | Mostly dry | Good | Busy |
| October | Wet spells | Some mist | Moderate |
| November | Wet | Delays likely | Low season |
| December | Drier | Steady | Busy at Christmas |
June to August and December to February are the drier spells, and June to October is when Aerolink has added extra rotations. Those are also the months when permits and lodge rooms near the strips sell out first, so book six months or more ahead. In April, May and November, pack for rain, keep a free evening after your return flight, and bear in mind that low season permits cannot be moved to another date. Month by month detail is in our guide to the best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda.
Fly In Gorilla Safari Prices and What a Quote Should Include
A fly in gorilla safari costs more than the road version, and nearly all of the difference is the flights. Seats from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro are roughly US$300 to US$600 per person each way, depending on the route and season, and some operators report a surcharge for Kisoro. Excess baggage, where there is space for it, has been charged at about US$3 per kg. The gorilla permit is the same by air or by road: US$800 for foreign non residents, US$700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens, or US$600 and US$500 in the April, May and November low season. Habituation is US$1,500, with a rise to US$1,800 announced.
Put together, operator packages for a 3 day fly in trip with permit, flights, transfers and a midrange or upper lodge commonly run from about US$2,500 to over US$4,000 per person sharing, and 4 or 5 day versions from about US$2,800 to US$4,500. Treat these as market ranges and ask for an itemised quote. A fly in quote has more moving parts than a road trip, so ask for each one by name.
Uganda’s permits are now paid in full at booking, so confirm the permit, then book the flight that serves it. The Uganda gorilla permits guide explains the process, and the gorilla trekking cost page breaks down a full budget.
Fly In Gorilla Safari Uganda FAQ
How much does a gorilla tour cost in Uganda?
The permit is US$800 for foreign non residents (US$600 in April, May and November), US$700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. A 3 day fly in tour with permit, flights, transfers and a good lodge commonly runs from about US$2,500 to over US$4,000 per person sharing; a road based 3 day trip with a budget lodge costs much less. Compare whole packages, not just the permit, on our Uganda gorilla trekking tours page.
Where do you fly into for gorilla trekking in Uganda?
Internationally, Entebbe. From there, light aircraft fly to Kihihi for Buhoma and Ruhija, or Kisoro for Rushaga, Nkuringo and Mgahinga. Some travellers fly into Kigali in Rwanda instead and drive four to five hours to the southern sectors.
Is it safe to go gorilla trekking in Uganda?
Treks are led by armed UWA rangers, groups are capped at eight, and the habituated families are used to people, so the trek itself is very safe if you follow the briefing. The bigger risks are a twisted ankle on a muddy slope and long road days, which flying removes. Check your government’s current travel advice too; our page on safety tips for visiting Uganda sums it up.
Which month is best for a fly in gorilla trek in Uganda?
June to August and December to February, when trails are firmer and morning flights are delayed less often. April, May and November are wetter and quieter, with a cheaper permit that cannot be rescheduled.
Is it better to fly or drive to Bwindi?
Fly if you have four days or fewer, are travelling with older relatives or children, or dislike long days in a car. Drive if you want to see the country on the way, with stops at Lake Mburo or Lake Bunyonyi. A popular middle path is road in, air out.
Can I land and trek gorillas on the same day?
Not safely. The briefing starts around 8:00, the first aircraft lands about then or later, and mist can hold it back. Always arrive the day before.
What if my flight to Bwindi is late or cancelled?
A good operator moves you to the next rotation or sends a vehicle by road. A late flight is no reason for a permit refund, which is the whole point of arriving a day early. Ask how delays are dealt with before paying.
Is a fly in gorilla trek worth it?
Most travellers who have done it say yes, mainly for the time saved and because they arrive rested for the trek. The trek itself is the same either way, and it can last under an hour or most of a day, so fitness counts for more than the transport. Our guide to trekking difficulty and fitness explains each sector.
Can children come on a fly in gorilla safari?
They can fly at any age, but nobody under 15 may trek gorillas. Younger children stay at the lodge or go on a village walk while the adults trek.
Can a fly in gorilla trip include Rwanda?
Yes. A common route lands at Kisoro, treks in Rushaga or Mgahinga, crosses the Cyanika border by road to Volcanoes National Park and ends with a flight home from Kigali. The Rwanda half is covered on our Rwanda gorilla tours page.
Joining a Fly In Gorilla Trip to Rwanda, Kenya or Tanzania
After Bwindi, Entebbe has direct flights to Nairobi and Kilimanjaro, so a fly in gorilla trip pairs easily with a Masai Mara safari or a Serengeti safari. In the migration months, connections to the Mara run through Kisumu or Nairobi. Rwanda has no scheduled flights to its gorilla park, so the Rwanda leg is a drive from the Cyanika border or a helicopter from Kigali. For road based and longer trips, compare Uganda gorilla trekking tours, and the Bwindi gorilla trekking guide covers the trek itself.
