Gorilla trekking from Entebbe needs three days at minimum, because Bwindi Impenetrable National Park sits eight to ten hours southwest by road, or about an hour and a quarter by light aircraft to Kihihi or Kisoro plus a short transfer. Most visitors land at Entebbe International Airport, sleep near the terminal, then set off with a driver guide or on the early flight. Bwindi and neighbouring Mgahinga hold close to half of all mountain gorillas.
Planning this from home can feel like a puzzle with too many pieces: a flight that lands at night, a permit for one corner of a big forest, and a road you have never seen. Take it one piece at a time and it falls into place. This guide covers the Entebbe and Kampala start only, so the route, the first night, flying against driving, the sector question and realistic trip lengths. The trek itself has its own page on gorilla trekking in Bwindi.

Why Gorilla Trekking from Entebbe Starts at Uganda’s Main Airport
Entebbe International Airport is the country’s international gateway, which is why a gorilla trekking safari from Entebbe is the standard plan for anyone flying straight into Uganda. The town lies on a peninsula in Lake Victoria about 40 km south of Kampala. Domestic flights to the gorilla airstrips leave from the same airport, and a few charters use Kajjansi airfield on the Kampala road.
So why start here rather than in Rwanda? One country, one visa, no border post. A choice between driving and flying. And the parks you pass on the way, Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth and Kibale Forest, turn a short gorilla tour into a full Uganda safari with very little extra driving.
The price you pay is distance. Southern Bwindi is about twice as far from Entebbe by road as it is from Kigali, and two days of any road trip go on the highway. Everything below is about handling that well.
People often ask whether Entebbe is in Kampala. It is not: it is a separate, quieter lake town, connected to the capital by an expressway. For a gorilla trip the two work as one starting point. A Kampala hotel adds about an hour of traffic on departure morning, which matters only if you are not already staying in the city for work.
Is Entebbe safe for tourists? It is one of the calmer towns in the region, and visitors move around it without much fuss. Normal city sense applies after dark, and our page on safety tips for visiting Uganda covers the current travel advice.
Your First Night in Entebbe Before the Gorilla Safari
Long haul flights tend to reach Entebbe in the evening or the small hours. Ten hours in a vehicle at dawn after that is miserable, so almost every sensible gorilla tour from Entebbe opens with a hotel night a few minutes from the terminal. Lakeside hotels and simple guesthouses both work; what matters is a short transfer and an early breakfast.
Your operator should meet you in arrivals with a name board and go through the plan on the drive to the hotel: pickup time, packed breakfast, where you sleep tomorrow. Ask then about the next morning’s weather on the road, since the driver will know.
Land in the morning and you gain a free afternoon. The botanical gardens and the lakeshore are a gentle start. Bird lovers can take a canoe into the Mabamba wetland to look for the shoebill. And a boat trip out to Ngamba Island, a forested island in Lake Victoria that houses orphaned chimpanzees, fits into half a day and gives a first look at great apes before the gorillas.
Paperwork for the airport and the road: passport with blank pages and at least six months of validity, your printed visa approval and your permit confirmation. Uganda’s immigration service announced in October that a yellow fever certificate is no longer a condition of entry, but health guidance still recommends the vaccine and Rwanda or Kenya may ask for the card on an onward crossing, so carry it. The ATMs in the arrivals hall give Ugandan shillings, and US dollar notes should be recent and undamaged, as older or torn notes are often refused.
Driving from Entebbe to Bwindi: The Gorilla Trekking Road Trip
The Entebbe to Bwindi road trip uses the main southwestern highway for most of the distance, then splits depending on which sector your permit names. Our guide to getting to Bwindi covers every road into the park; here is what matters when you start at the airport.
Leave early. Drivers like to be on the Entebbe Expressway by six, because traffic at Busega and Kyengera on Kampala’s western edge can eat an hour after seven. About two hours out you reach the equator at Kayabwe, where everyone stops for the photograph and the water demonstration. Beyond it the road passes the drum makers of Mpambire, then Masaka, then rolling Ankole cattle country where the long horned cattle graze near Lake Mburo. Lunch is usually in Mbarara, often at the Igongo Cultural Centre with its small museum.
Past Mbarara, two roads.
| Entebbe to | Via | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Mburo | Masaka | 4 to 5 hours |
| Buhoma | Rukungiri | 8 to 9 hours |
| Ruhija | Kabale | 9 to 10 hours |
| Rushaga | Kabale | 9.5 to 10.5 hours |
| Nkuringo | Kisoro | 9 to 11 hours |
| Mgahinga | Kisoro | 10 to 11 hours |
The times assume dry weather, a 4×4 and a lunch stop. In the rains, add at least an hour. Travellers who did the whole distance in one push say the same thing in trip reports: they arrived after dark, ate, slept badly and trekked tired.
Splitting the drive fixes that. A night at Lake Mburo National Park, four to five hours out, adds a boat trip or a game drive among zebra, impala and eland, and the next day to Bwindi drops to five or six hours. Heading for the south, Lake Bunyonyi outside Kabale does the same job and is a good place to rest on the way back too.

Flying from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro on a Fly In Gorilla Tour
A fly in gorilla safari from Entebbe swaps two long road days for a little over an hour in a small plane. Aerolink Uganda flies scheduled routes from Entebbe to both airstrips that serve gorilla country, and charter firms operate from Entebbe and Kajjansi. Our fly in gorilla safari guide goes deeper on schedules and aircraft.
Flying makes sense for travellers short on days, anyone whose back or knees dread ten hours in a vehicle, and people continuing to Kenya or Tanzania. A popular middle path is to drive down through Lake Mburo and fly back on the final morning, landing in Entebbe in time for an evening international departure. Timetables shift with the seasons, so get the schedule confirmed before you buy permits that depend on it. Helicopter charters exist for those who want them; see Uganda helicopter tours.
Picking the Right Bwindi Sector or Mgahinga for a Trek from Entebbe
The planning mistake that costs travellers the most on a gorilla trekking trip from Entebbe is a permit in one sector and a lodge in another. No road crosses the forest’s core, so moving between sectors can take two to five hours. Fix them in this order: permit sector first, then the route, then the lodge.
Buhoma gorilla trekking is the easiest sector to reach by road from Entebbe and the obvious pick if you fly to Kihihi or arrive from Queen Elizabeth through Ishasha. Gorilla tourism in Uganda began here in 1993 with the Mubare family, and Habinyanja, Rushegura and Katwe are among the groups trekked from Buhoma today. It has the widest spread of lodges in the north.
Ruhija gorilla trekking sits high on the eastern ridge above Kabale. Cooler, quieter, excellent for birding, and a reasonable drive from Entebbe.
Rushaga gorilla trekking has the most habituated families in the park and runs Uganda’s only gorilla habituation experience, a half day with a family still being used to people. It is a long road day from Entebbe but the quickest sector by air through Kisoro.
Nkuringo gorilla trekking begins with a steep descent to the forest edge and ends with the climb back. The ridge views across to the Virunga volcanoes are superb; if your knees complain on stairs, ask for Rushaga instead.
Mgahinga gorilla trekking is the furthest point from Entebbe by road yet close to Kisoro airstrip. One habituated family, plus golden monkey tracking and volcano hikes. Our comparison of Bwindi and Mgahinga compared sets the two side by side.
The short version: driving from Entebbe, aim for Buhoma or Ruhija; flying, aim for Rushaga or Buhoma; with three days and a car, leave Nkuringo and Mgahinga for another trip. Our guide to booking Uganda gorilla permits explains how sectors and dates are allocated.
Gorilla Trekking Itineraries from Entebbe: 3, 4, 5 and 7 Day Trips
Here are four sample gorilla trekking tours from Entebbe, each a realistic shape you can hand to operators when you ask for quotes. All assume an Entebbe hotel night on arrival, not counted in the days. A same day trek from Entebbe cannot be done and two days by road barely works, which is why the very short trips start from Kigali or Kisoro, as our page on 1 day gorilla trekking in Uganda explains.
Three days is the shortest trip most operators sell. It works, yet a rain delay, a stomach bug or a late flight leaves no room at all. Our 3 day gorilla trekking itinerary runs through each version hour by hour.
Our 4 day gorilla safari page sets out more variations on this length.
That seven day loop is the classic Uganda primate circuit. First timers often prefer it, since no single day runs much beyond six or seven hours on the road. Longer trips of eight or nine days add Murchison Falls in the north, sometimes with rhino tracking at Ziwa on the way. A three day habituation trip, flying to Kisoro for a morning in Rushaga, is another short option from Entebbe. For more, see chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, our Queen Elizabeth safari guide, gorilla and chimpanzee safaris, the 7 day Uganda safari plan and longer versions on our Uganda gorilla trekking tours page.
The Gorilla Trekking Day for Travellers Coming from Entebbe
Whichever way you arrived, the gorilla trekking day runs to the same pattern. Check in at the sector office for a briefing at about 7.30 to 8am. Rangers split visitors into groups of up to eight, one group per family, and the walk begins where trackers left the gorillas’ nests the evening before. Trackers go ahead at dawn and radio the family’s position back to your ranger.
How long is the walk? Anywhere from under an hour to most of the day; two to six hours covers most treks. You then get one hour with the family, staying at least 10 metres away, with no flash and voices low. Mountain gorillas share about 98 percent of our DNA and catch human colds easily, so anyone with a cough or flu is kept back. The minimum age is 15; younger children can join a guided Batwa or village walk while the adults trek.
Along the trail you may hear or see other primates, such as red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus and grey cheeked mangabeys, plus forest birds that birders travel a long way for. Sightings are a bonus, not a promise.

Hire a porter. They carry your daypack, steady you on muddy banks and earn a real wage, and many are from families that once depended on the forest. Pack waterproof boots that are already broken in, a rain jacket, long trousers tucked into socks or gaiters, gardening gloves for the nettles, two litres of water and a snack; our gorilla trekking packing list and trekking boots guide go further. Flying in? Pack in a soft safari duffel to stay inside the luggage limit.
Worried about fitness or mobility? Tell the operator early. Rangers can assign slower walkers to a family that is usually closer, and a porter carried chair can be arranged for travellers who cannot walk the trail. Our pages on trekking difficulty and fitness and gorilla trekking for travellers with special needs explain both.
Then the return leg, which is where tight plans fall apart. By road the way back takes as long as the way out, and Kampala’s evening traffic can add more. Book your international flight for the next day, or fly back from Kisoro or Kihihi on the last morning. Several trip reports mention how good a final quiet night in Entebbe felt, with time to repack and wash off the red dust before a long flight.

Planning a Gorilla Tour from Entebbe: Seasons, Quotes and Booking
Three decisions shape a gorilla tour from Entebbe more than any other: when you go, what the quote covers and how far ahead you book.
Timing. The drier months, roughly June to September and December to February, bring firmer trails and the busiest permit demand. March to May and October to November are wetter, with muddy roads that slow the drive from Entebbe, fewer visitors and lodge discounts. Uganda has announced a lower permit rate for April, May and November, which pulls some budget travellers into the rains. See our guide to the best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda for each month.
The quote. Quotes for a gorilla trekking package from Entebbe differ more in what they include than in the total, so read each line before comparing.
What moves the price most is how many people share the vehicle, the lodge tier and whether you fly. Two travellers sharing one driver guide pay much less each than a solo traveller. Travelling in the low season, choosing budget lodges and keeping the trip short are the three savings that work; our pages on budget gorilla trekking in Uganda and the full gorilla trekking cost breakdown go through them, and our Bwindi lodges guide lists lodges by sector, from community camps to places such as Mahogany Springs Lodge in Buhoma.
Booking. Permits are limited to eight people per family per day, so the permit comes first and everything else is built around its date. Three to six months ahead is comfortable for most months, longer for the dry season and the Christmas period. Only book with an operator who can name a real UWA permit for your date; unofficial gorilla visits are illegal and unsafe for the animals.
Entebbe or Kigali as the Start of a Uganda Gorilla Trek
If your flights are not booked yet, weigh the two gateways honestly. Kigali in Rwanda is four to five hours by road from Rushaga and Nkuringo, roughly half the drive from Entebbe, and many travellers now land there and cross into Uganda to trek at the Ugandan permit price. Our guide to gorilla trekking in Uganda from Kigali covers that route, its borders and its visas.
Entebbe is the better start for Buhoma, Ruhija and fly in trips, and whenever you want more of Uganda than the gorillas, such as Kibale’s chimpanzees or the Ishasha lions. Kigali wins for the shortest possible trip to the southern sectors. Some travellers fly into Entebbe and out of Kigali on an East Africa Tourist Visa, driving the whole southwest in one line. For Rwanda’s own gorillas see Rwanda gorilla trekking and our comparison of Uganda against Rwanda; to add the wildebeest migration after the forest, our Masai Mara safari guide and gorillas and Masai Mara trips show how the flights connect.
Gorilla Trekking from Entebbe: Questions and Costs
How much does it cost to trek with a gorilla in Uganda, and what does a trip from Entebbe cost?
A standard Uganda gorilla permit is US$800 for foreign non residents, US$700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. For April, May and November UWA has announced a cheaper US$600 permit (US$500 for foreign residents), which cannot be moved to another date once bought; every permit is now paid in full when you book. A 3 day road trip from Entebbe with the permit, a midrange lodge, meals and transport is typically quoted at about US$1,300 to US$2,000 per person for two people sharing, and more for one. Fly in trips tend to begin around US$1,900 per person and go beyond US$3,500 with luxury lodges. The half day habituation experience costs US$1,500, and an increase to US$1,800 has been announced. Use these as planning ranges and ask each operator for an itemised quote.
What do flights, visas and porters add to the cost?
Scheduled seats from Entebbe to Kisoro or Kihihi run to several hundred US dollars per person each way, and fares change with the season, so get the current price from your operator. Uganda’s single entry eVisa is US$50; the US$100 East Africa Tourist Visa adds Rwanda and Kenya. A porter usually costs about US$15 to US$20 for the day, with a tip on top.
Is gorilla trekking worth the money?
Most people who go say yes, for practical reasons as much as emotional ones. The permit pays for the rangers, trackers and vets who keep the gorillas safe, and a share goes to villages around the park. The hour is short, yet sightings are very reliable, and a trip from Entebbe can take in Lake Mburo or Queen Elizabeth for little extra. On a tight budget, the low season permit and a shared vehicle save the most.
Which month is best for gorilla trekking in Uganda?
June to September and December to February are the drier months, with firmer trails and easier driving from Entebbe. They are also the busiest, so book early. March to May and October to November are wetter and quieter, with lower lodge rates and the announced low season permit in April, May and November. Gorillas can be trekked in every month.
Which is better for gorilla trekking, Rwanda or Uganda?
Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is closer to its airport and has more top end lodges. Uganda has more habituated families, a far cheaper permit, the habituation experience and easy add ons such as chimpanzees and savannah game drives. Starting in Entebbe, Uganda is the natural choice; our page on Uganda against Rwanda compares them in detail.
How many hours is the drive from Entebbe to Bwindi?
Plan on eight or nine hours to Buhoma by the Rukungiri road and nine or ten to Ruhija or Rushaga by way of Kabale, with Nkuringo and Mgahinga further still. Those times include lunch. In the wet months allow at least one more hour.
Can I do a gorilla trek from Entebbe in one or two days?
Not in any comfortable way. The briefing is at about 8am and the forest is a full day’s travel from Entebbe, so you have to spend the night near your sector first. By road or by air, three days is the realistic shortest trip.
Should I drive or fly from Entebbe to the gorillas?
Flying suits travellers with few days, a dislike of long drives or a bad back or knees. Driving suits those who want to see the countryside, sleep at Lake Mburo or Lake Bunyonyi and spend less. Plenty of people drive down and fly back, which takes something from both.
Is Entebbe safe for tourists, and should I stay there or in Kampala?
Entebbe is a calm lake town and an easy first stop. Stay there rather than in Kampala unless you have business in the capital: it is minutes from the airport and avoids an hour of city traffic on the dawn departure. Check current government travel advice before you go.
Will I definitely see the gorillas?
Nothing in the wild is guaranteed, but sightings are very reliable because trackers locate each family before trekkers set out. On the rare day a group walks all day without reaching its family, UWA’s rules allow the permit to be moved or part of it refunded; our permit guide sets out the terms.
Can I go on a gorilla trek from Entebbe alone?
Yes. Operators happily run private trips for a single traveller, and on trek day the rangers add you to a group of up to eight. The vehicle and driver are yours alone, though, so the cost per head is higher than for a couple or a group.
Can children or older travellers trek from Entebbe?
Trekkers must be at least 15. There is no upper age limit; older travellers trek every week with a porter, a walking stick and a family chosen for an easier walk, and a carried chair can be booked through the operator for those who need it.
How early should I book a gorilla trip from Entebbe?
For most months, three to six months is enough. For June to September and the weeks around Christmas, go earlier. Secure the permit before anything else, then fit flights and lodges to its date.
