4 Day Gorilla Trekking Safari in Uganda: Bunyonyi, Queen Elizabeth or Mburo

Gorilla SafarisGorillasUganda

4 days of gorilla trekking in Uganda gives you one trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park plus a second stop, usually Lake Bunyonyi for rest and canoeing or Queen Elizabeth National Park for a boat trip and game drive. Most trips run by road from Entebbe or Kampala, while shorter versions start in Kigali or fly to Kisoro or Kihihi. Bwindi, a UNESCO World Heritage forest in southwest Uganda, holds close to half of all mountain gorillas.

4 day gorilla safari at a glance
Shape. Travel day, gorilla trekking day, a second destination, then the return. Three nights.
Main versions. Gorillas plus Lake Bunyonyi or Lake Mutanda, gorillas plus Queen Elizabeth, gorillas plus Lake Mburo, or two gorilla treks.
Start points. Entebbe or Kampala by road, Kigali across the border, or Entebbe by scheduled flight.
On the trek. Up to eight visitors per gorilla family, one hour with them, 10 metres away, minimum age 15.
Who runs it. Licensed Uganda safari companies. This site is an independent guide and does not sell trips or permits.

Three days works, and our 3 day gorilla trekking safari page covers it, but it leaves no slack around a ten hour drive. A fourth day buys a buffer and a change of scene.

How 4 Days of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Are Put Together

Every 4 day gorilla trip starts from the permit. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) issues it for one date, one Bwindi sector and one family, and the operator builds the route around that morning. Permit first, then lodge, then vehicle.

The second stop is where trips differ. Lake Bunyonyi, a short drive from the southern sectors, suits people who want rest after the trek. Queen Elizabeth National Park adds a boat safari, lions and elephants at the price of a longer travel day. Lake Mburo breaks the drive from Kampala with zebra and a boat cruise. And some trips skip the second stop to spend the spare day on a second gorilla trek.

Bwindi’s four sectors, Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south, sit hours apart. Southern permits pair with Bunyonyi or Mutanda; a Buhoma permit pairs with Queen Elizabeth through Ishasha. Somebody coming from the Masai Mara rarely needs Queen Elizabeth.

4 Day Gorilla Trekking and Lake Bunyonyi Safari, Day by Day

This is the most common 4 day gorilla trekking safari in Uganda, and the gentlest. It suits permits in Rushaga, Nkuringo or Ruhija.

Variant 1: Gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi by road from Entebbe or Kampala
Day 1. Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi. Leave around 7am. Equator stop at Kayabwe, about two hours out, then lunch in Mbarara or at the Igongo cultural centre with its Ankole longhorn cattle, and up through Kabale into the Kigezi hills. Eight to eleven hours in all.
Day 2. Gorilla trekking. Briefing at 7.30am to 8am, a trek of thirty minutes to most of the day, one hour with the family, then your trekking certificate. Batwa or village walk if your legs allow.
Day 3. Bwindi to Lake Bunyonyi. Two to three hours from Rushaga or Ruhija. Afternoon dugout canoe or motorboat trip to the islands.
Day 4. Lake Bunyonyi to Entebbe or Kampala. Seven to eight hours via Kabale and Mbarara, arriving in the evening.

Some operators run the trek and the lake on the same day, walking out by early afternoon and driving two hours to Bunyonyi, which frees day three for a slow morning on the water. Others reverse the trip, driving to Bunyonyi first for a shorter day one and trekking on day three. The reversed order puts a full night between the long drive and the trek; the standard one puts the rest after the trek, when most people want it.

4 Day Gorilla Safari with Queen Elizabeth National Park

The gorillas and Queen Elizabeth safari trades a rest day for wildlife. It works best with a Buhoma permit, because Ishasha lies on the road between Bwindi’s northern gate and the rest of the park.

Variant 2: Gorillas, Ishasha and the Kazinga Channel by road
Day 1. Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi. Via Rukungiri and Kihihi to Buhoma, eight to ten hours.
Day 2. Gorilla trekking in Buhoma. Morning trek, afternoon village walk or Batwa experience.
Day 3. Bwindi to Queen Elizabeth. About 65 kilometres to Ishasha, searching the fig trees for tree climbing lions, then north to Mweya for the two hour afternoon launch on the Kazinga Channel.
Day 4. Game drive and return. Early drive on the Kasenyi plains, then six to seven hours to Kampala or Entebbe.

The launch is where most people see the most: hippos in numbers, buffalo at the water’s edge, elephants coming down to drink. Ishasha lions are less reliable, and people who pass in an hour report empty trees more often than not. The Queen Elizabeth National Park safari guide and the page on tree climbing lions in Uganda set fair expectations.

4 Day Gorilla Trip via Lake Mburo or with an Entebbe Arrival Night

Two more shapes of the 4 day gorilla tour deal with the same problem, the long first drive.

Variant 3: Lake Mburo on the way in
Day 1. Kampala to Lake Mburo. About 240 kilometres via the equator, four to five hours. Afternoon boat cruise for hippos, crocodiles and, with luck, the African finfoot.
Day 2. Lake Mburo to Bwindi. Early walk or game drive among zebra, impala, eland and buffalo, then five to six hours to the sector.
Day 3. Gorilla trekking. The standard trek day.
Day 4. Bwindi to Kampala. Eight to ten hours, lunch in Mbarara.

Mburo halves the drive in and adds a little savannah, though the last day stays long. The Lake Mburo National Park guide covers lodges and walks.

Entebbe arrival night. International flights often land late, so many packages spend night one in Entebbe, with the botanical gardens, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre or a Lake Victoria sunset cruise for a spare afternoon. Only a morning flight to Kisoro or Kihihi on day two then makes the rest of the trip fit.

Other 4 Day Gorilla Tours: Kigali Start, Fly In, Double Trek and Habituation

Kigali start. Four to six hours to Rushaga or Nkuringo via Musanze and the Cyanika border, about half the Entebbe drive. Trek on day two, Bunyonyi or Mutanda on day three, back through Katuna on day four. Uganda runs one hour ahead of Rwanda. See the Kigali to Bwindi route guide.
Fly in. Entebbe night, morning flight to Kisoro for the south or Kihihi for Buhoma and Ruhija, trek on day three, fly back on day four. Soft bags and tight weight limits. Our fly in gorilla safari page covers airstrips, and a helicopter charter is the private version.
Double gorilla trek. Two permits on consecutive days, ideally two families or two sectors. People who spent the first hour behind a camera say the second is the one they actually watched. Nkuringo’s families are widely rated the hardest, so avoid booking two there if your fitness is in doubt.
Habituation. The gorilla habituation experience in Rushaga gives up to four hours with a family still being habituated.
Golden monkeys or Mgahinga. With a southern permit, day three can be golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga, whose own Nyakagezi gorilla family is a fallback when Bwindi permits are gone.
Gorillas and chimps. Four days with flights can include Kibale chimps; see the gorilla and chimpanzee safari page.

The Gorilla Trekking Day Inside a 4 Day Itinerary

The gorilla trekking day looks the same in every variant. You are at the ranger post before 8am, where rangers brief the group and assign up to eight people to a family. Mention knee or fitness worries at the briefing; slower walkers are often matched with a closer family.

Trackers have been out since dawn from last night’s nest site, and the ranger follows their radio calls. A trek can be twenty minutes. It can also be six hours of steep, wet, off trail scrambling through vines and nettles, so carry lunch and two litres of water regardless.

The hour goes faster than anyone expects. Rangers keep the group at 10 metres where they can, though a juvenile will sometimes walk straight past you. No flash, quiet voices, no eating near the family. Afterwards you collect a certificate at the post.

Hire a porter. They carry your bag, pull you up the steep bits, and the fee goes straight to a local family; travellers who skipped one on a long Rushaga trek often regret it. The Uganda gorilla trekking guide covers the day in depth, and the Batwa people page explains how to choose an ethical cultural visit.

Lake Bunyonyi and Lake Mutanda Canoe Trips on a Gorilla Tour

Lake Bunyonyi, usually translated as a place of many little birds, sits at roughly 1,950 metres in the terraced hills west of Kabale, long and narrow with around 29 small islands. Evenings need a fleece.

A Bunyonyi canoe trip is the standard activity, in a dugout with a paddler or a motorboat. The usual loop passes Akampene, the small Punishment Island where unmarried pregnant girls were once abandoned, and Bwama, once a leprosy settlement. Some lodges add a zipline or village walks.

Dugout canoes moored by a thatched jetty on Lake Bunyonyi with terraced hills beyond
Dugout canoes are still the everyday transport on the southwest’s highland lakes.

Swimming is where the brochures overreach. The lake is widely described as free of bilharzia, crocodiles and hippos, but that claim comes from tourism sources rather than a health authority, so ask locally. Ignore the line about it being one of Africa’s deepest lakes. Accommodation runs from island campsites to cottages above the water, such as Birdnest at Bunyonyi and Arcadia Cottages, and reviews of food and service vary.

Holding a Rushaga or Nkuringo permit? Lake Mutanda is the quieter canoe trip, closer to the trailhead, with the Virunga volcanoes across the water. Chameleon Hill Lodge sits above Mutanda, and Lake Mulehe Safari Lodge is another lakeside base near Kisoro.

Choosing the Bwindi Sector and Lodges for a 4 Day Gorilla Trip

Sector decides your gorilla trip route more than anything else, and your lodge must sit in the same sector as the permit. A Buhoma lodge with a Rushaga permit means a dawn drive of several hours, and late arrivals lose the permit.

Rushaga. The most families and usually the easiest permits. Pairs with Bunyonyi, Mutanda or Kigali. See Rushaga gorilla trekking.
Nkuringo. Steep ridge walking, big Virunga views, fewer families. See Nkuringo gorilla trekking.
Ruhija. High and cool, reached from Kabale, close to Bunyonyi. See Ruhija gorilla trekking.
Buhoma. The original sector, home of the Mubare and Habinyanja families, closest to Queen Elizabeth. See Buhoma gorilla trekking.

At the budget end are places such as Gift of Nature Lodge in Ruhija or the Buhoma community bandas. Midrange options include Bakiga Lodge, Buhoma Community Haven Lodge and Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge. Just above them sits Mahogany Springs in Buhoma, an upper midrange lodge, and at the top is Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge in Nkuringo. The full list is in our Bwindi lodges guide.

What a 4 Day Gorilla Safari Package Should Include

Quotes for a 4 day gorilla safari package can look wildly different for the same trip. Check each covers the same things.

The gorilla permit. Named by date and sector. Some quotes list it separately, which makes the package look cheaper.
Three nights. Lodge names, room type and meal plan, normally full board.
Private 4×4 and driver guide. With fuel; a pop up roof matters for Queen Elizabeth and Mburo.
Activities by name. Kazinga launch, Mburo boat cruise, canoe hire, the Batwa or village walk, airport transfers and any flights.
Exclusions in writing. Porters, tips, drinks, laundry, visas, insurance and international flights.

Then ask three things. What happens to the permit if a road washes out on day one? How far is the lodge from the trailhead? And if your date sells out in one sector, which family or sector will they offer instead?

4 Day Gorilla Trekking Cost in Uganda: Permit and Package Ranges

The permit is the largest single line in any 4 day gorilla trekking cost. UWA charges US$800 for foreign non residents, US$700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens, dropping to US$600 and US$500 for the foreign categories in April, May and November, when permits are paid in full at booking and cannot be rescheduled. Gorilla habituation costs US$1,500 in place of the standard permit, with a rise to US$1,800 for foreign non residents announced by UWA.

Operator quotes for a 4 day road trip with gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi, including the permit, midrange lodges, meals and a private vehicle, commonly start around US$1,700 per person for two sharing and run to about US$2,500. The Queen Elizabeth version costs a little more for park fees and the launch, and fly in or luxury versions often start near US$3,500. Group size moves the figure most: a solo traveller carries the whole vehicle and a single room supplement, while a group of six splits both. These are typical ranges, not fixed prices; the gorilla trekking cost guide breaks the total down line by line.

Best Months and Packing for a 4 Day Uganda Gorilla Tour

Gorilla trekking tours run every day of the year. What changes by month is mud, crowds and permit availability.

June to August. The main dry season, firmer trails and the earliest sell outs.
September and October. Showers return, but treks run normally and permits are easier to find.
December to February. The second dry spell, busy around Christmas.
March. Wet, quiet, full rate permits.
April, May and November. The wettest months and the low season rate. Slippery trails, and Bunyonyi canoe trips may be cut short by afternoon storms.

Our best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda page goes month by month. Pack waterproof boots for gorilla trekking, trousers tucked into socks, a long sleeved top, a light rain jacket and gardening gloves for the nettles, plus a fleece for Bunyonyi evenings. The gorilla trekking packing list covers the rest, including what to leave behind if you fly in.

Going Further: Chimps, Rwanda and East Africa Safari Add Ons

Add days and the options open up: chimpanzees in Kibale are the most booked extension, and the 7 day Uganda safari and the Uganda safari guide lay out longer routes with Murchison Falls. For Rwanda, see our Rwanda gorilla trekking guide and the comparison of Uganda and Rwanda gorilla trekking. Further afield, the gorillas combine well with the Masai Mara or a Tanzania safari, a short flight from Entebbe or Kigali.

4 Days Gorilla Trekking Uganda: Your Questions

How much is gorilla trekking in Bwindi?

The UWA permit is US$800 for foreign non residents, US$700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens, or US$600 and US$500 for the foreign categories in April, May and November. Budget on top for porters, commonly US$15 to US$20 plus a tip, and tips for rangers, trackers and your driver guide.

Is it cheaper to see gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda?

Uganda, by a wide margin. Rwanda’s permit costs US$1,500 against Uganda’s US$800, and Uganda’s lodges are cheaper at every tier. Rwanda wins on travel time, since Volcanoes National Park is two to three hours from Kigali, and a Kigali start into Bwindi’s southern sectors gets you both advantages.

Is gorilla trekking safe in Uganda?

Treks run under armed ranger escort, and the large majority of visitors have no problems. Bwindi lies near the Congo border, though, and several governments currently advise extra care or against travel, so read your own government’s advice before booking and again before you go. Our Uganda safety guide summarises the advisories.

What is the best safari in Uganda for four days?

For most first timers, gorillas plus Queen Elizabeth with a Buhoma permit, which adds lions, elephants and the Kazinga Channel. If you have done a savannah safari already, gorillas plus Lake Bunyonyi is more restful.

Is 4 days enough for gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Yes, for one trek and one other stop. It is tight by road, with two long drives, so fly one leg or start in Kigali if you want more time at the lake or in the park. With only a day to spare, our guide to 1 day gorilla trekking in Uganda shows what is possible.

How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?

Fit enough for a few hours of steep, muddy hill walking at altitude. Tell the rangers if you are worried, hire a porter and use a walking stick. Our page on gorilla trekking with special needs covers carried options.

Can children join a 4 day gorilla trip?

Gorilla trekking has a minimum age of 15. Younger children can stay at the lodge with a parent, and Lake Bunyonyi, Lake Mburo and the Queen Elizabeth game drives have no age limit.

When should I book flights home after the trip?

The road version reaches Entebbe or Kampala in the evening of day four, so book a late night departure at the earliest, or better, the next day. A fly in version usually lands in Entebbe by midday.

How far ahead should I book a 4 day gorilla safari?

Three to six months for most dates, longer for June to September and Christmas. Each family takes only eight visitors a day. Our gorilla permit booking guide explains the process.
