Gorilla Trekking and Victoria Falls: 7 to 14 Day Itineraries

AfricaGorilla SafarisGorillas

Yes, gorilla trekking and Victoria Falls fit into one trip of 7 to 14 days: two to four nights near Bwindi in Uganda or Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, one flight day connecting through Johannesburg, Nairobi or Addis Ababa, then two or three nights at the falls on the Zambia and Zimbabwe border. No gorillas live near the falls, so the link is always a regional flight. Most travellers book both halves through one licensed operator and secure the gorilla permit date first.

The gorilla and Victoria Falls trip at a glance
Countries. Uganda or Rwanda for the gorillas; Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls town) or Zambia (Livingstone) for the falls; Botswana’s Chobe as an easy extra by road.
Length. Seven days is the realistic minimum with Rwanda; nine to eleven suits Uganda; fourteen allows two treks and a game park. Our Uganda safari guide lists the game parks that fit.
Flights. No nonstop route links the gorilla airports with the falls on most schedules, so plan one connection and a full travel day.
Best months. June to September for dry forest trails and a full curtain of water you can still see through the spray.
Book first. The gorilla permit. Flights and falls lodges fit around its date.

How a Gorilla Trekking and Victoria Falls Trip Fits Together

Two halves that feel nothing alike. The gorilla trek is one hard morning on foot ending with a single hour beside a habituated family, in a group of no more than eight; the falls are a gentle base of viewpoint walks, river cruises and optional adventure. Every version is built from four blocks: an arrival night in Kigali or Entebbe, a gorilla block of two to four nights, a connection day, and two or three nights at the falls.

Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi oa Tunya, is a curtain about 1,708 metres wide that drops roughly 108 metres into a basalt gorge between Livingstone in Zambia and Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe. The gorilla parks lie close to two thousand kilometres north, served by different airlines.

Permits are sold for a fixed date and a missed trek is not refunded, so never land in Uganda or Rwanda the evening before your trek. That single rule decides most of the plans below.

For the falls in more depth, our Victoria Falls Zambia guide covers Livingstone Island, the rhino walk and the gorge activities, and the Zimbabwe safari guide covers the rainforest path and Hwange. The forest half is explained on our Bwindi gorilla trekking guide.

Flight Routes Between the Gorilla Parks and Victoria Falls

Three airports serve the falls: Victoria Falls Airport on the Zimbabwe side, Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula in Livingstone on the Zambia side, and, much further off, Harare. Kigali and Entebbe serve the gorillas. Linking them on a gorilla and Victoria Falls safari almost always means one change of plane.

Via Johannesburg. The most common link. Flights connect Kigali and Entebbe with Johannesburg, which has several daily flights to Victoria Falls and Livingstone. Some timings leave a long wait or a night in Johannesburg.
Via Nairobi. Kenya Airways has linked Nairobi with Victoria Falls or Livingstone on some days of the week, with easy connections from Entebbe and Kigali.
Via Addis Ababa. Ethiopian Airlines has served Victoria Falls on certain days, connecting from both gorilla airports.
Via Lusaka or Harare. RwandAir has flown to Lusaka and Harare at times. From Harare a short domestic hop reaches Victoria Falls; from Lusaka it is a domestic flight to Livingstone or a long road day.

Check current schedules before you fix any dates. Routes here open, close and change days often, and travellers report regional timings moved weeks before departure. Keep every leg on one ticket, and if a schedule only works with a night in Johannesburg, take it rather than a tight connection. Road (roughly 1,300 kilometres from Johannesburg) and a luxury train from Pretoria also reach the falls, but only suit the start of a long holiday.

On the gorilla side, gorilla trekking from Entebbe explains the road and bush flight routes to each Bwindi sector. Many operators send falls travellers into Kigali instead, then drive across the Katuna or Cyanika border to Bwindi’s southern sectors in four to five hours; Bwindi gorilla trekking from Kigali covers that route, which lets you pair Rwanda’s airport with Uganda’s lower permit price.

Gorillas First or the Falls First: Ordering the Safari

Both orders work, and your long haul ticket usually decides. Most planners put the gorilla trek first. Legs are fresh, the hard day is done early, and the falls make a relaxed ending with a sunset cruise instead of a muddy climb. The holiday also finishes near Johannesburg, the easiest hub for flights home to Europe, North America or Australia.

Falls first suits travellers landing in Johannesburg or adding South Africa or Botswana, and gives a delayed bag time to catch up before the trek. Whichever way you go, book the permit date first and fit the falls nights around it; the gorilla permits guide explains how Uganda sells them, and the Rwanda gorilla trekking page covers Rwanda.

One health detail follows the order. South Africa asks travellers arriving from yellow fever risk countries, which include Uganda and Rwanda, for a vaccination certificate, even on a long transit. Gorillas first through Johannesburg means carrying the original card in your hand luggage.

7 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trek and Victoria Falls Tour

The shortest version that does not feel rushed. It uses Rwanda gorilla trekking because Volcanoes National Park is about two and a half hours by road from Kigali airport.

Day 1, Kigali. Arrive and sleep in the city.
Day 2, to Volcanoes. Drive north to Kinigi; a village walk or the Dian Fossey tomb hike in the afternoon.
Day 3, gorilla trek. Briefing at Kinigi, farmland to the park wall, then bamboo and hagenia forest.
Day 4, golden monkeys and Kigali. Morning golden monkey tracking, then back to Kigali for the night.
Day 5, connection day. Fly to Victoria Falls or Livingstone via Johannesburg, Nairobi or Addis Ababa; sunset cruise if you land early.
Day 6, the falls. Guided walk along the rainforest path, then a helicopter flight or the Zambezi cruise.
Day 7, departure. A morning activity, then the airport.

Day 4 is the buffer against a long trek or a closed road. The Rwanda gorilla tours page compares the short trips that make up this half, and golden monkey trekking covers day 4. If flights squeeze you further, 1 day gorilla trekking from Kigali explains when a same day trek is realistic.

9 Day Bwindi Fly In Gorilla Safari and Victoria Falls

This one uses Uganda’s lower permit price and light aircraft to keep road time short, with a spare forest day before the long hop south.

Day 1, Entebbe. Arrive and sleep at a lakeside hotel.
Day 2, fly to Bwindi. Morning flight to Kihihi for Buhoma or Ruhija, or Kisoro for Rushaga and Nkuringo.
Day 3, gorilla trek. Anything from under an hour to most of the day reaching your family.
Day 4, spare forest day. A second trek, the waterfall trail, a Batwa community visit or rest.
Day 5, back to Entebbe. Bush flight out; night near the airport.
Day 6, connection day. Entebbe to Victoria Falls or Livingstone with one connection.
Day 7, the falls on foot. The rainforest walk in the morning, a sunset cruise for hippos and elephants.
Day 8, river or air. Rafting in the Batoka Gorge, a microlight or helicopter flight, or Livingstone Island in season.
Day 9, departure. Usually via Johannesburg.

The Entebbe night on day 5 protects the connection, since cloud can hold bush flights. The fly in gorilla safari page compares the Kihihi and Kisoro flights, and Buhoma gorilla trekking describes the families in the most visited sector. The day 4 village visit is explained on our page about the Batwa people.

10 Day Falls First Safari with Chobe, Nyungwe Chimps and Volcanoes

This falls first safari starts in the south and works north, ending with the gorillas. It suits travellers arriving through Johannesburg and leaving from Kigali, and it adds chimpanzees in Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest so that the long flight north is followed by two primate treks. Our guide to the best African safari countries covers both regions.

Day 1, Victoria Falls. Land at Victoria Falls Airport, transfer to a lodge above the Zambezi, sunset cruise.
Day 2, the falls tour. Guided walk along the viewpoints, a village or town visit, and a boma dinner with drumming in the evening.
Day 3, adventure day. A helicopter flight over the gorge, then rafting or a quiet canoe trip on the upper river.
Day 4, Chobe. Road to Kasane through Kazungula, a boat safari on the Chobe River and an afternoon game drive.
Day 5, connection day. Early game drive, then fly to Kigali with one connection.
Day 6, to Nyungwe. A long road day southwest to the forest edge.
Day 7, chimpanzee tracking. An early chimp trek, then the canopy walkway in the afternoon.
Day 8, to Volcanoes. Drive north; the Gorilla Guardians village or the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund campus near Kinigi.
Day 9, gorilla trek. One family in Volcanoes National Park.
Day 10, departure. Back to Kigali airport.

Days 6 and 8 are long drives, so this plan needs patience or a light aircraft charter. A Nyungwe stay also qualifies for Rwanda’s low season permit offer from November to May. The Nyungwe Forest guide covers the chimps and the canopy walk, and our Chobe safari page explains the riverfront.

11 Day Gorillas, Chimps, Chobe and Victoria Falls Safari

The fuller version. Uganda by road with a driver guide adds chimpanzee tracking in Kibale and the Queen Elizabeth plains, then the falls add a day of game viewing in Chobe across the Botswana border.

Day 1, Entebbe. Arrival and a briefing with your guide.
Day 2, to Kibale. Six to seven hours west via Fort Portal.
Day 3, chimpanzee tracking. Morning trek from Kanyanchu, afternoon in the Bigodi wetland.
Day 4, Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi. A Kazinga Channel boat trip or the Ishasha plains, watching for tree climbing lions.
Day 5, gorilla trek. One family in Buhoma or Ruhija.
Day 6, Bwindi to Entebbe. Bush flight from Kihihi, or a long drive with a stop at the equator.
Day 7, connection day. To Victoria Falls or Livingstone.
Day 8, the falls. Walk the rainforest path, cruise the upper Zambezi at sunset.
Day 9, Chobe day trip. Road to Kasane through the Kazungula border, a morning boat safari and an afternoon game drive.
Day 10, adventure day. Rafting, the bridge bungee, a gorge swing or a quiet morning.
Day 11, departure. Airport and home.

Days 2 and 4 are long, so add chimps only if they matter to you. The Botswana safari packages guide shows how Chobe and the Okavango Delta are sold, the Botswana and Victoria Falls itinerary lays out longer southern plans, Kibale chimpanzee trekking covers day 3, and the Queen Elizabeth National Park safari page covers day 4.

14 Day Double Gorilla Trekking and Victoria Falls Adventure

Two gorilla forests and a proper stay at the falls, with Kigali as the gorilla hub. This double gorilla trekking plan gives you two different families in two countries.

Day 1, Kigali. Arrive and rest.
Day 2, to Volcanoes. Memorial visit, then Kinigi.
Day 3, Rwanda gorilla trek. One family in Volcanoes National Park.
Day 4, golden monkeys and the border. Morning tracking, then across Cyanika to Lake Mutanda or Rushaga.
Day 5, Uganda gorilla trek. Rushaga, Nkuringo or Mgahinga, or the four hour habituation experience.
Day 6, Lake Bunyonyi. Canoeing and a rest day.
Day 7, back to Kigali. Four to six hours via Katuna or Cyanika.
Day 8, connection day. Kigali to Victoria Falls via Johannesburg, Nairobi or Addis Ababa.
Days 9 and 10, the falls. Both sides, the gorge, a flight and the river.
Days 11 to 13, Hwange or Chobe. Three nights of game drives at a camp in Hwange, about two hours from Victoria Falls town, or on the Chobe riverfront.
Day 14, departure. Victoria Falls airport.

The Uganda and Rwanda gorilla safari guide covers this two country leg, the habituation experience page explains the Rushaga option, and the Zimbabwe safari cost guide shows what Hwange nights add.

Grand Safari Tours Adding the Serengeti or Masai Mara

Several operators sell a bigger three region safari: gorillas, a savannah park in Tanzania or Kenya, then the falls to finish. Twelve days is the floor and fourteen feels better, because each region adds a flight.

Days 1 to 3, gorillas. Kigali, then a trek in Volcanoes, or a drive across the border to Bwindi’s southern sectors and a night by Lake Bunyonyi.
Days 4 to 8, the plains. Fly to Kilimanjaro for Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, or to Nairobi for Amboseli and the Masai Mara.
Day 9, connection day. Nairobi or Kilimanjaro to Victoria Falls, sometimes through Harare or Johannesburg.
Days 10 to 12, the falls. Viewpoints, a sunset cruise, rafting, then home.

Time the plains for the herds. The wildebeest are usually in the Mara and northern Serengeti from about July to October, which also suits dry gorilla trails and a visible falls curtain. Read Tanzania safari and gorilla trekking, the gorilla and Masai Mara safari guide and the two week East Africa safari before adding the falls.

At the other extreme, overland tours of about six weeks drive by truck from Victoria Falls to Nairobi through Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, with a gorilla trek near Kisoro and most nights camping. They suit travellers with time who like group travel.

Zambia or Zimbabwe: Picking a Falls Base After Your Trek

On a short Victoria Falls tour after the gorillas, you sleep on one side of the border and visit the other on a morning crossing.

Victoria Falls town, Zimbabwe. Most of the falls’ frontage faces the Zimbabwe rainforest path, with viewpoints at the Devil’s Cataract, the Main Falls, Rainbow Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. The town is compact and walkable, and water keeps falling on this side all year. Best for a first visit or a low water month.
Livingstone, Zambia. Riverside lodges on the upper Zambezi, the Knife Edge Bridge with its close view into the gorge, the Boiling Pot trail, Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pool in low water, the white rhino walk, and microlight flights. Best for a quieter river stay.
Both. The bridge crossing is short, so many people base on one side and spend a morning on the other. A KAZA UniVisa, where available, covers both countries and day trips to Chobe.

Fly into the side where you will sleep, so arrival day has one border. Livingstone’s airport is far closer to the falls than Lusaka, which is why operators avoid the capital for short trips. The Zambia safari guide and Zambia safari cost page go deeper.

Victoria Falls Activities That Fit Around a Gorilla Trek

After a muddy forest day, most people take the falls slowly. The guided falls tour along the viewpoints takes two to three hours; hire a raincoat from about February to June. The sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi brings hippos, crocodiles and elephants on the banks.

Helicopter flights over the gorge last about twelve or twenty five minutes, and microlights fly from Zambia. White water rafting runs in the Batoka Gorge, with the full route in low water, and the bridge has a bungee jump, gorge swing and zip line. Quieter mornings suit a canoe trip, a game drive in the Zambezi or Mosi oa Tunya parks, a village visit with Tonga and Leya families, or a boma dinner with drumming. Around each full moon in high water, a lunar rainbow tour runs at night. From about mid August, trips go out to Livingstone Island and, water permitting, Devil’s Pool. Rafting days are long, so never book one the day before your flight home.

Timing a Gorilla and Victoria Falls Safari Month by Month

Treks run every day and the falls flow all year, but the two halves peak at different times. The best time for gorilla trekking and Victoria Falls is when Bwindi’s dry season meets a full curtain you can still see through the spray.

Month Falls flow Gorilla trails Note
January Rising Drier Hot, stormy
February Rising fast Drier Good treks
March Near peak Wetter Heavy spray
April Peak Wettest Low season
May High Wet Low season
June Full curtain Dry Very good
July Clear view Dry Best
August Clear view Dry Best
September Dropping Dry Devil’s Pool
October Low Rains return Very hot
November Lowest Wet Low season
December Low, rising Drying Holiday peak

June to August is the classic window: cool mornings at the falls, a full curtain with thinner spray, and dry forest trails. Permits sell out first in these months, so book four to six months ahead. December to February is a second dry spell in Bwindi, while the falls are rising and the Zambezi valley is hot and stormy.

September and October suit people who want to swim at Devil’s Pool and run the full rafting route. The Zambian side thins sharply, but Zimbabwe keeps water falling. March to May brings the loudest falls and so much spray you may see mostly mist from the path, while Bwindi’s slopes turn slippery; Uganda sells reduced low season permits for April, May and November. More detail sits on the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda, and the Zambia guide above has a monthly water level table.

What a Gorilla and Victoria Falls Quote Should Include

The two halves are often run by different companies, so check the safari quote leg by leg.

Gorilla permit, named and dated. Country, sector and trek date. “Subject to availability” means it is not booked.
The regional flight. Every leg between the gorilla airport and the falls, with connection times and baggage allowance written down.
Vehicle, guide and transfers. Private 4×4 with driver guide in Uganda or Rwanda, bush flights if used, and airport transfers at the falls.
Falls activities and park entry. Which are included, which side, and whether the rainforest entry is inside the price. Helicopter flights often carry a separate fuel surcharge and park fee.
Named lodges and meal plans. Every night, including any Johannesburg or Entebbe stopover.
Exclusions and a delay plan. Usually visas, international flights, insurance, porters, tips, drinks and optional activities; plus what happens if a flight is cancelled the day before the trek.

Ask two or three companies for itemised quotes on the same lodges and nights. The gorilla trekking cost guide breaks down the forest half, and Uganda gorilla trekking tours explains how operators package it. Part of every permit funds rangers and community projects around the parks, which is one reason to book through a licensed company that buys permits from the park authority directly.

Visas, Yellow Fever, Safety and Bags for a Two Region Trip

Uganda and Rwanda each issue their own visas, and the East Africa Tourist Visa covers both, plus Kenya, on one multiple entry visa. At the falls, Zambia lets many nationalities in without a visa, Zimbabwe charges most visitors, and the KAZA UniVisa has covered both countries plus day trips to Chobe. Its availability has been patchy at times, so carry US dollar cash as a fallback.

Carry the original yellow fever card. South Africa asks for it from travellers coming from Uganda or Rwanda, Uganda checks for it at Entebbe, and Zambia or Zimbabwe may ask on arrival from a risk country. Health entry rules across the region also change when disease outbreaks start or end. At the latest check, the US State Department rates Uganda at Level 4, Do Not Travel, and Rwanda at Level 3, so read your own government’s current advice for every country on your route; our Uganda safety guide sets out the detail. Malaria is present in both regions; see a travel clinic, and buy safari insurance that covers trip disruption and adventure activities such as rafting.

Pack for two climates: rain jacket, gaiters and gardening gloves for the forest; a poncho, dry bag and swimwear for the falls. Bush flights in Uganda allow about 15 kg in a soft bag, so one safari duffel bag does both halves. Wear your boots on the regional flight and keep trek clothes in hand luggage; a delayed bag cannot follow you into the forest on a fixed permit date. The gorilla trekking packing list and African safari packing list cover the rest.

Gorilla Trekking and Victoria Falls FAQ

How much does a gorilla trekking and Victoria Falls trip cost?

As a rough market guide for two sharing, with permits included and international flights excluded: a road based 8 to 10 day trip with a Uganda permit and simple to mid range lodges is commonly quoted around US$4,500 to US$7,000 per person; mid range trips with bush flights and a Chobe or Hwange extension around US$7,000 to US$11,000; short luxury trips with a Rwanda permit and top lodges from about US$10,000 to well over US$20,000. The regional flight between the gorilla airport and the falls often costs several hundred to over a thousand US dollars one way, depending on the route. These are ranges, not prices.

What do gorilla permits, falls entry, activities and visas cost?

Uganda’s gorilla permit is US$800 for foreign non residents, US$700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens, with low season permits at US$600 (US$500 for residents) in April, May and November on fixed dates that cannot be rescheduled. Permits are paid in full at booking. The habituation experience is US$1,500, with a rise to US$1,800 announced. Rwanda’s permit is US$1,500, with 30 percent off (US$1,050) from November to May for visitors who also stay in Nyungwe or Akagera. The Zimbabwe rainforest entry is US$58 for international visitors, and the Zambian side has been about US$20, though the official tariff could not be confirmed. One large operator’s current optional list prices half day rafting at about US$218 and a 12 minute helicopter flight at about US$173 before fuel surcharge and park fees. The KAZA UniVisa has been sold at US$50, a Zimbabwe single entry visa is US$30 for most nationalities, and the East Africa Tourist Visa is US$100. Driver guides commonly receive about US$10 to US$20 per guest per day in tips.

Can I combine gorilla trekking with a few days at Victoria Falls?

Yes. The usual plan is three or four days around the trek, one flight day, then two or three nights at the falls. Seven days works with Rwanda, nine to eleven with Uganda, and fourteen allows two treks plus Hwange or Chobe.

Is there a direct flight from Kigali or Entebbe to Victoria Falls?

Not on most schedules. Expect one connection, usually in Johannesburg, Nairobi or Addis Ababa, and sometimes in Lusaka or Harare.

Is Uganda or Rwanda better to combine with Victoria Falls?

Rwanda if time is short, since Volcanoes is close to Kigali airport. Uganda for a cheaper permit, more gorilla families, chimps in Kibale and the habituation experience. Flying into Kigali and driving to southern Bwindi gives you some of both; see Uganda vs Rwanda for gorilla trekking.

How fit do I need to be for the gorilla trek on this trip?

Reasonably fit. A trek can take under an hour or most of a day on steep, muddy ground at altitude. Porters carry daypacks, and the minimum age is 15 in both countries. See how hard gorilla trekking is.

Will I see the full falls when I visit?

From March to May the falls are at full flood but spray can hide them. From October to December the Zambian side may be largely dry rock, while Zimbabwe still has water. June to August gives the best balance.

What if a flight delay makes me miss my gorilla trek?

The permit is lost, which is why every plan here puts a full day between arriving in Uganda or Rwanda and trekking. Ask your operator in writing what they do if the regional flight is cancelled.

Can I trek gorillas in Congo on the same trip?

Not at present. Virunga National Park lists its gorilla and Nyiragongo treks as closed until further notice at the latest check, so plans use Uganda or Rwanda. Our Congo gorilla trekking page tracks the situation.

Can I add the Serengeti or the Masai Mara as well?

Yes, as a three region trip of twelve days or more. See Tanzania safari and gorilla trekking and the gorilla and Masai Mara safari guide, then add the falls at the end.

Is there a group tour that covers gorillas and the falls?

Yes. Some operators run small group departures, and long overland truck tours link Victoria Falls with Uganda’s gorillas over several weeks with camping most nights. Private trips give more control over the permit date and pace.
