A Tanzania honeymoon package is usually ten to twelve nights that pair a private northern safari in the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and often Tarangire with a Zanzibar beach stay, linked by one light aircraft flight. Couples book it through a licensed Arusha operator, either as a set route or built around their own dates. June to October and late December to February suit both halves best, and the camps, the coast and the pace you choose decide how the trip feels.
Tanzania honeymoon at a glance.
Planning a honeymoon alongside a wedding is a lot to carry. Happily, the choices narrow to three: your travel month, your nights in the bush and which side of Zanzibar you wake up on. Want the long version? Our 15 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar itinerary goes day by day, and the wider Africa honeymoon safari guide sets Tanzania beside Kenya, Botswana and South Africa.

How a Tanzania Honeymoon Package Is Put Together
Almost every Tanzania honeymoon safari is built from the same blocks. You land at Kilimanjaro after the long haul flight and sleep near Arusha. Next come two or three stops on the northern circuit in a private 4×4 with your own driver guide. Then a light aircraft carries you to Zanzibar, and a beach hotel holds you until the flight home.
Pace is what turns that into a honeymoon. Fewer moves, a vehicle that stops when you ask, a double bed made up before you arrive. Keep the bed count low: couples who came home tired almost always describe a new lodge every night, while the ones who loved it stayed two or three nights per camp.
Planners put the safari first for a practical reason: game drives start before sunrise, the roads past the crater are corrugated, and the beach then works as recovery rather than a warm up. Our guides to Tanzania safari packages and the wider Tanzania safari guide explain each part in more depth.
Sample Tanzania Honeymoon Safari Routes, Night by Night
These are the shapes most Tanzania honeymoon packages take. Treat them as planning templates that any licensed operator can quote against your dates.
Two details earn their keep. The second rim night turns the crater from a dash into a slow morning, with rooms looking down into the caldera and fires lit against the cold above 2,000 metres. And flying from Seronera or another Serengeti airstrip straight to Zanzibar, instead of driving back to Arusha, saves most of a day, a point forum regulars make to honeymoon planners again and again.
For plain safari versions, see the 7 day Tanzania safari through Lake Natron and the 10 day Tanzania safari.
Choosing Serengeti, Crater and Tarangire Camps for a Honeymoon Safari
On a honeymoon safari in Tanzania, the camp shapes the days more than the park does. Three styles cover nearly everything an operator will offer.
Where a camp stands matters as much as its style. Inside the Serengeti, you are on the game at first light; outside a gate, the room is cheaper but each morning starts with an hour of driving. Karatu farm lodges are warmer and quieter than the rim, yet forty minutes or more from the descent road. On the rim itself, check which side the lodge is on: a few of the most photographed ones sit a long way from the crater entry road, so the morning descent begins with a long drive in the dark.
Tell every camp and hotel it is your honeymoon, in writing and through your operator. Many will lay on a private dinner or a sundowner for two. Rooms with plunge pools go first, and ask for a double bed by name, since some camps make up twins unless told. Our best luxury African safari tours guide and the safari lodges page cover the wider range.

No camp can promise wildlife. The Ngorongoro Crater safari gives one of the better chances of black rhino in East Africa, Tarangire is known for big elephant herds in the dry months, and the central Serengeti keeps resident lion, leopard and cheetah through the year. The great wildebeest migration adds the herds wherever they happen to be.
Romantic Safari Experiences to Add: Balloons, Bush Dinners and Maasai Village Tours
Most of the touches that make a Tanzania honeymoon trip feel special are easy to arrange if you ask early.
A few couples add one wilder stop. Lake Natron, north of the crater, is hot and remote, with flamingos on the soda lake and Ol Doinyo Lengai on the skyline. Empakai, a smaller crater in the Ngorongoro highlands, has a steep hike down to a flamingo lake. Lake Manyara, on the road to the crater, fits as a half day for its groundwater forest and baboons.
Some camp groups also offer a honeymoon rate that reduces one partner’s room charge, provided you travel within a set period after the wedding and show your marriage certificate. Operators who book these camps usually know which ones run an offer that season, so ask them directly; the terms are summarised in the FAQ.
If wedding guests contribute through an agent’s honeymoon gift list, check the money sits in a protected account.

Zanzibar Beach Stays on a Honeymoon Trip: Picking the Coast by Tide
The beach half of a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar honeymoon can disappoint for one avoidable reason: the tide. Zanzibar’s east coast lies behind a reef, and at low water the sea pulls far back across the lagoon, leaving seaweed farms and rock pools where you pictured a swim. Couples who wanted to swim at any hour are the ones who say they chose the wrong side.
Ask each hotel about its own beach and the tide during your exact week. Big all inclusive resorts and small boutique hotels share the north and northeast coasts, so pick by mood as much as budget.

Give Stone Town half a day at least for the old fort, the market, the carved doors and the cathedral built over the last open slave market in East Africa. Zanzibar is mostly Muslim, so cover shoulders and knees in town, and expect a slower pace during Ramadan.
Southern Tanzania Honeymoon Safaris and Quieter Island Stays
Couples who dislike seeing ten vehicles at one lion often choose a southern Tanzania honeymoon safari over the north. Nyerere National Park, the former Selous, is a short light aircraft hop from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam, and its Rufiji River camps run boat safaris, walks and game drives within one stay. Ruaha has big lion prides and few visitors but a longer flight, so give it three nights. Both are at their best in the dry months, and several camps close in April and May.
The islands have quieter options too. Pemba, north of Zanzibar, is greener and far less visited, with steep reef walls for divers. Mafia Island, inside a marine park south of Dar es Salaam, is known for whale sharks from around October to February, though sightings are never certain, and pairs naturally with Nyerere. Further south, a handful of small private island lodges sit in the Songo Songo archipelago, reached by light aircraft, for couples who want almost nobody else around.
Southern flights run only on certain days, so these routes work best at ten nights or more.
Best Months for a Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Honeymoon
The safari and the beach share their best weather, which is a large part of why a Tanzania honeymoon works so well.
| Months | Safari half | Zanzibar |
|---|---|---|
| Jan to Feb | Calving, Ndutu | Hot, calm |
| Mar | Green, humid | Hot, rain rising |
| Apr to May | Long rains | Wettest, closures |
| Jun | Dry, Grumeti | Fresh, breezy |
| Jul to Oct | Dry, Mara River | Dry, breezy |
| Nov | Short rains | Showers |
| Dec | Green, herds south | Hot, busy |
June to October is the safe answer. Little rain, animals gathered at water, a breezy island and river crossings in the far north from about July. It is also the busiest and dearest stretch, and the best migration camps can book out close to a year ahead.
Late December to February is the other sweet spot, and the better one if you like heat. The herds calve around Ndutu, a short drive from the crater, while Zanzibar is hot and calm.
April and May deserve hard thought. The long rains hit the coast hardest and some hotels and camps close, though rates drop and the crater still delivers. November brings short rains that rarely last all day. Our best time to visit Tanzania page has the month by month detail, and the great migration safari packages by month page shows where to base the Serengeti nights.
Comparing Tanzania Honeymoon Package Quotes and Safari Operators
A good Tanzania honeymoon package quote names every lodge, night, board basis, vehicle and flight, so you can lay two quotes side by side.
Camp tier moves the price most, then season, then flights, which add cost but save road days. The beach hotel can cost as little as a few safari nights or as much as the entire safari. Our Tanzania safari cost and Serengeti safari cost guides break the safari half down.
Ask for deposit and cancellation terms in writing, confirm the operator holds a Tanzanian tour operator licence, and compare three quotes for the same route. If one is far cheaper, look for the night that moved outside the park or the camp that changed to “or similar”. A local Arusha operator or an overseas agent who books through one can both deliver a fine honeymoon, as long as one party holds every booking.
Adding Gorilla Trekking or Kilimanjaro to the Honeymoon Trip
Tanzania has no mountain gorillas. Couples who want them fly to Kigali or Entebbe and add three or four days for gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Rwanda gorilla trekking, usually before the safari, so the hardest walking day comes first and the beach comes last. The minimum trekking age is 15 and each family is visited for one hour. The gorilla trekking on your honeymoon guide and our page on combining a Tanzania safari with gorilla trekking lay out the routes, and Uganda gorilla permits sell out first in the dry months. Couples still choosing a country can start with our guide to the best African safari countries.
A Kilimanjaro climb fits as well: climb first, then a short safari, then the island to rest sore legs. It suits honeymoons of two weeks or more, and the Kilimanjaro gear list covers what the mountain adds to your bags.
Flights, Visas, Money and Paperwork for a Tanzania Honeymoon
Book flights, permits and hotels in the names on your current passports, not married names you have not yet changed.
From North America, most couples connect through a hub such as Doha, Addis Ababa or Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro and fly home from Zanzibar. One Tanzania tourist visa covers both the mainland and Zanzibar, applied for online through the immigration portal. Tanzania also requires a government inbound travel insurance policy, and a single policy covers the mainland and Zanzibar together. It is emergency cover only, so our African safari insurance guide explains what a proper policy adds.
Both halves are malaria areas. Zanzibar checks yellow fever certificates for anyone arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, which includes Kenya and Uganda, so carry yours if a gorilla trek comes first. English is spoken at every camp alongside Swahili. The currency is the Tanzanian shilling, but US dollars are widely used for tips and park extras; bring clean, recent notes, since older or torn bills are often refused. At the latest check, the US State Department rated Tanzania Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution; read your own government’s advice before you go.
Light aircraft limit bags to a soft duffel of about 15 kg. Our safari duffel bag guide, the African safari packing list and what to wear on safari help with the rest: neutral layers for cold dawn drives, a fleece for the crater rim, something modest for Stone Town. A pair of safari binoculars is worth sharing between you.
Tanzania Honeymoon Package Questions
How much does a Tanzania honeymoon package cost?
Published operator prices for the safari half run roughly US$450 to US$800 per person per day mid range, two sharing with park fees included, and from about US$900 to well past US$1,500 at luxury tented camps. Zanzibar hotels run about US$150 to US$400 per person per night mid range, and well over US$1,000 at top resorts. For ten to twelve nights, excluding international flights, that puts a mid range honeymoon at roughly US$5,000 to US$9,000 per person and a luxury one from about US$10,000 to past US$15,000 per person. These are market ranges, not official rates, so ask for itemised quotes and check whether a price is per person or per couple.
What do the flight to Zanzibar, the balloon and the paperwork cost, and are there honeymoon discounts?
A one way light aircraft seat from a Serengeti airstrip to Zanzibar usually costs about US$300 to US$600 per person. Shared Serengeti balloon flights are published at about US$599 to US$700 per person with breakfast. The Tanzania tourist visa is US$50 for most nationalities and US$100 for US citizens, and the compulsory inbound insurance is US$44 per person, covering the mainland and Zanzibar. Some camp groups have offered honeymooners up to half off one partner’s accommodation for stays of two nights or more, with a marriage certificate and travel within six or twelve months of the wedding, usually not combinable with other offers. Park and crater fees are set out on our Serengeti safari cost page.
What does it cost to add gorilla trekking to a Tanzania honeymoon?
The permit is the fixed part. Uganda charges US$800 per foreign non resident (US$700 for foreign residents), with a US$600 rate in April, May and November that cannot be rescheduled, and permits are paid in full at booking. Rwanda charges US$1,500, with a US$1,050 offer from November to May when the trip includes nights in Nyungwe or Akagera. Flights, lodges and transfers come on top.
How many nights should a Tanzania honeymoon be?
Ten to twelve nights suits most couples: five or six on safari across two or three camps, then four or five on Zanzibar. Seven nights works as a fly in trip to one Serengeti camp plus the beach. Three beach nights is the minimum that feels like a rest.
Should we do the safari or the beach first?
Safari first for most couples, because early game drives and rough roads are easier while you are fresh, and the beach then works as recovery. Beach first helps if you arrive worn out from the wedding.
Can a Tanzania honeymoon package be customised?
Yes. Honeymoon safaris are almost always private, so the route, camps, number of nights and extras can all change. The set packages on operator websites are starting points; the real limits are camp availability and the days light aircraft fly.
Which part of Zanzibar is best for a honeymoon?
Nungwi and Kendwa in the north if you want to swim at any time of day and watch the sunset. Matemwe and the northeast for quiet and Mnemba snorkelling. The east coast around Paje and Jambiani for long lagoon walks, accepting that low tide empties the water.
Which Tanzania park is best for a honeymoon safari?
The Serengeti, for most couples, because two or three nights in one well placed camp gives slow, private days with resident cats year round and the migration nearby in season. Add one morning in the Ngorongoro Crater for rhino, and Tarangire in the dry months for elephants.
Is a Tanzania honeymoon safari worth doing in the rainy season?
November to March can be lovely, with brief storms, newborn animals and fewer vehicles. April and May are harder, with heavy rain and some camps and beach hotels closed; if those are your only dates, a lodge route with the crater and central Serengeti is safest.
Is Tanzania safe for a honeymoon?
Most visits pass without trouble. At the latest check the US State Department rated Tanzania Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution. Keep valuables out of sight in Stone Town at night, use hotel taxis and dress modestly away from the beach, and check your own government’s advice before you travel.
How far ahead should we book a Tanzania honeymoon package?
Nine to twelve months ahead for July to October, Christmas and the calving season, especially for the best camps and rooms with plunge pools. Shoulder and green season trips can often come together three to six months out.
